Today, MMA Sarawak Chairman, Dr. Lau Bik Liang, attended the 30th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony to present the MMA Sarawak Gold Medal Award for Best Medical Doctor 2026 to its deserving recipient, Dr. Ranjeeta Kaur A/P Kalwant Singh.

During the convocation ceremony, the Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, in his capacity as Pro-Chancellor of UNIMAS, announced an encouraging increase in the number of Yayasan Sarawak scholarships for UNIMAS medical students, from 40 to 80 scholarships.

This is a significant and positive step towards developing more homegrown medical professionals and addressing the shortage of doctors in Sarawak. Investing in the education and training of our future doctors is an investment in the future of Sarawak’s healthcare system.

MMA Sarawak warmly congratulates Dr. Ranjeeta Kaur on this outstanding achievement and extends our heartfelt congratulations to all newly graduated doctors.

MMA Sarawak Connects with Year 1 and Year 2 UNIMAS Medical Students – 29 October 2026

MMA Sarawak engaged with 323 Year 1 and Year 2 medical students at UNIMAS, encouraging them to join the Society of Malaysian Medical Association Medical Students (SMMAMS) and become part of the MMA family.

Led by Dr Lau Bik Liang, MMA Sarawak Chairman, the session highlighted the importance of getting involved early, building connections with fellow medical students nationwide, and gaining valuable experiences through SMMAMS.

We are delighted that 176 students signed up as SMMAMS members! This encouraging response reflects the students’ enthusiasm to connect, participate, and grow as part of the MMA family.

Also in attendance were Dr Joshua Taylor, MMA Sarawak Treasurer, and Prof. Dr. Chew Keng Sheng, MMA Committee member and medical lecturer at UNIMAS, who lent their support to this initiative to inspire and nurture the next generation of medical professionals.

MMA Sarawak extends its heartfelt appreciation to Encik Zulkarnaen Ali, Ketua Penolong Pendaftar UNIMAS, Dr Siti Fairouz Binti Ibrahim and Dr Grace Chua Pin Fen of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS, for their invaluable support and assistance in making the event a success.

SMMAMS Membership Drive at UNIMAS City Campus - 21 October 2026

MMA Sarawak engaged with Year 3 medical students at UNIMAS City Campus, encouraging them to join the Society of Malaysian Medical Association Medical Students (SMMAMS) and become part of the MMA family.
The session began with welcome remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deburra, followed by MMA Sarawak Chairman, Dr. Lau Bik Liang, who shared the benefits of joining the society. Dr Lau emphasised that being part of the association goes beyond membership — it is a lifelong learning journey that fosters continuous professional development, meaningful connections and active involvement in the medical fraternity. Prof. Dr. Chew Keng Sheng and Dr. Tiong Xun Ting, MMA Committee Members, also supported the initiative to engage and inspire future medical professionals.
We are delighted that 87 medical students signed up as members. This encouraging response reflects the students’ enthusiasm for professional growth and their willingness to be part of a wider medical community built on lifelong learning and camaraderie.
MMA Sarawak looks forward to supporting these future doctors as they continue their journey in medicine.

Food Aid Distribution
MMA Sarawak partnered with Hope Place Charity on 17 October 2026 for a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, distributing essential food supplies worth RM2,500.00 to six deserving families in Kuching. Dr. Lau Bik Liang, MMA Sarawak Chairman, along with Immediate Past Chairman Dr. Ong Eng-Joe, participated in distributing the food aid. They engaged warmly with the families, providing not only essential provisions but also kindness and care, reaffirming MMA Sarawak’s commitment to serving the community with compassion

🩺 Kenyalang Webseries | October CME
Another successful Kenyalang Webseries by the MMA Bintulu Subcommittee! 🦅
It was a pleasure and privilege to serve as the moderator for this month’s CME session, featuring “ENT Emergencies in GP Practice” by Dr Yasmin, ENT Surgeon from Kemena Pacific Hospital, Bintulu.
📚 117 participants registered for the session — a fantastic response and a great reflection of our doctors’ commitment to continuous learning.
The session was highly engaging, practical and packed with valuable take-home points for GP practice, especially on recognising ENT emergencies early and knowing when to refer.
A big thank you to Dr Yasmin for sharing her expertise, and to everyone who joined and actively participated.
We’re already looking forward to next month’s Kenyalang Webseries! 🦅
