On 8 September 2026, Columbia Asia Extended Care Hospital Shah Alam (CAECHSA) welcomed members of the media for the “Beyond Discharge: Rebuilding Independence Through Continuous Care” Media Roundtable Session.

For many patients, reaching medical stability after a stroke, serious illness, injury or surgery is not the end of their recovery journey. Regaining mobility, communication, personal care skills and the confidence to return to everyday life can take time, support and continued care.

As a rehabilitation-focused hospital, CAECHSA supports patients who no longer require acute treatment but still need structured rehabilitation, medical oversight and nursing care to help them regain function and work towards returning home. The media roundtable offered an opportunity to explore how this approach to continuous care supports patients throughout their recovery.

The session brought together perspectives from medical, rehabilitation, nursing and personal care professionals, alongside a patient and caregiver, to share insights into the recovery journey and the role each plays in helping patients regain greater independence.

The media also joined us on a guided tour of the hospital, followed by a demonstration and hands-on experience with selected rehabilitation activities and assistive equipment. This offered a closer look at the everyday challenges patients face throughout their recovery.

As Columbia Asia celebrates 30 years in Malaysia, we remain committed to supporting patients beyond treatment and through the journey towards recovery, greater independence and a return to everyday life.

A heart attack does not always look like what we see in movies.

While chest pain is one of the most common signs, some people may experience symptoms differently — such as breathing difficulty, nausea, sweating, pain spreading to the arm or jaw, or unusual discomfort.

The important thing is knowing when to take these symptoms seriously.

Heart attack risk can be linked to factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, age, s*x, and family history.

In conjunction with World Heart Day, let’s take heart health more seriously — not only when symptoms become severe, but also when warning signs begin to appear.

👁️ Red Eye vs Blurry Vision: What’s the Next Step?

Not every red eye or case of blurry vision is something we should simply “wait and see.” Some symptoms may be signs of an underlying eye condition that requires timely medical attention.

We were pleased to welcome Great Eastern Advisera Agency for an insightful health talk led by our Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr. Kosyilya Arumugam, focusing on how to recognise common eye symptoms, understand when they may be concerning, and know when it’s time to seek professional care. 👨‍⚕️👁️

The session was followed by a hospital tour, giving our guests a closer look at our facilities and the services we provide.

Thank you to Great Eastern Advisera Agency for spending the day with us and making health education a priority! 💙

Not every healthcare success story is marked by a dramatic recovery. Sometimes, success is found in small improvements achieved through persistence, dedication, and teamwork.

Following a severe brain injury, a young patient developed a Stage 4 sacral pressure wound during prolonged hospitalisation. At Columbia Asia Extended Care Hospital, consistent wound care, regular dressing changes, and close monitoring became an important part of his recovery journey.

Despite challenges, including infection with multidrug-resistant organisms, the wound showed gradual improvement through months of dedicated care.
As shown in the wound progression photos, what started as a deep and severe pressure wound gradually became healthier and smaller over time with consistent treatment and monitoring.

This case reminds us that healing is not always quick, but with patience, commitment and strong family support, meaningful progress is possible.

Communication is more than just words. 🗣️

For someone living with aphasia, finding the right words, understanding speech, reading or writing can become challenging. Speech therapy can support the recovery of communication skills through targeted activities that focus on oral motor skills, word retrieval and language comprehension.

Every step forward matters. Every voice deserves to be heard. ❤️
