♿ BREAKING BARRIERS: OPENING EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully mobilized 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to participate in a 1-Day Enlightenment Training on “Export Inclusiveness and Opportunities”, organized by the The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). The event was held on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 at Kano Chamber of Commerce, Trade Fair Complex, Zoo Road, Kano State Nigeria.

The training provided an important platform for PWD participants to learn about Nigeria’s non-oil export , export procedures, documentation requirements, market access, and pathways for participating in the global economy.

A key technical session on Export Procedures and Documentation was delivered providing participants with practical knowledge on the requirements and processes involved in exporting goods and .

The programme also featured interactive discussions, stakeholder engagement, goodwill messages, and certificate presentation.

🤝 DPI remains committed to advancing economic , inclusive employment, entrepreneurship, and equal access to opportunities for Persons with .

We believe that should never be a barrier to entrepreneurship, trade, innovation, or participation in the global marketplace.

On 2nd September 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) conducted the Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with youths with disabilities in Kano State, Nigeria, under the project “Inclusive Work for Youths with Disabilities” which is co-funded by the AU-EU Youth Lab

The FGDs were organised into 2 separate groups to create a safe and inclusive space for participants to freely share their experiences:

👨‍🦽 FGD for Young Males with Disabilities
👩‍🦽 FGD for Young Females with Disabilities

The discussions explored the lived experiences of youths with disabilities, with particular focus on:

🔹 Employment Barriers – challenges accessing decent work and employment opportunities.
🔹 Workplace Discrimination – experiences of discrimination, stigma and unequal treatment in workplaces.
🔹 Accessibility Challenges – barriers related to physical environments, transportation, communication, technology and workplaces.
🔹 Policy Gaps – gaps in policies & laws, implementation and institutional support affecting employment inclusion.

The insights gathered from these discussions will contribute to generating evidence-based recommendations and advocacy strategies aimed at promoting inclusive employment opportunities and improving the participation of youths with disabilities in the workforce.

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully delivered a 2-Day Training Workshop for its Staff, Board Members, and Key Volunteers on Policy Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Strategies. It was held between 29th–30th August 2026 in Kano State, Nigeria. The training is part of Technical Assistance (TA) supported by Disability Rights Fund (DRF).

The training strengthened participants’ knowledge and practical skills in policy , stakeholder mapping and engagement, strategic partnerships, evidence-based advocacy, advocacy communication, negotiation, and influence.

Through interactive sessions, group discussions, and practical exercises, participants developed valuable to strengthen DPI’s advocacy work and engagement with policymakers, government institutions, civil society , and other key stakeholders.

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully conducted a 2-Day Capacity Building Workshop for a Youth-Led Research Team on 24th and 25th August 2026.

The workshop was organised under the Inclusive Work for Youths with Disabilities project, which is co-funded by AU-EU Youth Lab

The training was designed to strengthen the capacity of the youth-led research team to conduct Baseline Study on Employment Barriers, workplace discrimination, challenges, and policy gaps affecting persons with disabilities in Kano State.

Another Milestone: Climate Justice for PWDs ♿🌱

Another has been achieved in advancing climate justice and disability inclusion in Kano State!

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully conducted Cohort 4 of the 2-Day Capacity Building Training on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from 17–18 August 2026 in Kano State, Nigeria, with support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF).

The training strengthened participants’ knowledge and understanding of change, mitigation and adaptation strategies, climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and inclusive climate action.

Through interactive and discussions, participants explored practical ways persons with disabilities can actively contribute to climate action and advocate for their meaningful inclusion in climate , programmes, and decision-making processes.

With the successful completion of Cohort 4, DPI has now reached and trained 100 persons with (PWDs) through Cohorts 1, 2, 3, and 4, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing disability-inclusive climate action and climate .

We believe that persons with disabilities must not be left behind in the fight against climate ; they must be and included as active agents of change.

International Youth Day 2026 🌏 ♿

Theme: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”

On this International Youth Day 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) joins young people, organizations, , and partners around the world in celebrating the energy, resilience, creativity, leadership, and contributions of people.

This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reminds us that while young people may live in different circumstances and face different , they share common aspirations for dignity, equality, opportunity, decent work, participation, and a better future.

For young persons with , these aspirations are no different. They want opportunities to learn, work, lead, innovate, participate in decision-making, and contribute meaningfully to their .

However, , inaccessible workplaces, limited employment opportunities, skills gaps, and inadequate implementation of inclusive continue to create barriers.

In recognition of this reality, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) is proud to announce its readiness to commence the implementation of its new 12-month project, “Inclusive Work for Youths with Disabilities in Kano State, Nigeria,” co-funded by the AU–EU through the Youth Action Lab .

The project will advance inclusive employment through four interconnected phases:

✅1. Baseline Study:
To identify employment , workplace discrimination, challenges, and policy gaps affecting youths with disabilities in Kano State.

✅2. Capacity Building Training:
To equip youths with disabilities with employability, , and advocacy skills that will strengthen their opportunities for decent and meaningful .

✅3. Multi-Stakeholder Policy Dialogue:
To engage government institutions, employers, civil society organizations, private-sector actors, and other in advancing inclusive employment policies and accessible .

✅4. Public Awareness Campaigns:
To promote equal employment opportunities, challenge negative , combat discrimination, and encourage employers and communities to recognize the abilities and contributions of with disabilities.

At DPI, we believe that different contexts should never mean different opportunities. Regardless of , gender, background, or circumstances, every young person deserves the to work, participate, lead, and thrive.

As we celebrate International Youth Day 2026, let us move beyond as a principle and work together to create real opportunities, accessible workplaces, inclusive policies, and meaningful participation for youths with disabilities.
