dragen geven, op momenten dat zij het nodig hebben, op een discrete manier aan dat er wellicht iets meer tijd, hulp of aandacht nodig is.

👉Dit verschilt dus ook per persoon, per moment.

🌻💛Naar schatting is ongeveer 80% van alle beperkingen niet zichtbaar. Het kan gaan om neurologische, cognitieve, zintuiglijke, psychische en chronische aandoeningen die niet altijd direct opvallen.

🌻💛Niet alle beperkingen zijn zichtbaar, maar een beetje begrip en vriendelijkheid helpen veel om iedereen zich gezien, begrepen en gesteund te laten voelen.

The Migraine Trust speak to Sarah about her experience of living with migraine 🌻

"For many people, migraine is a hidden condition: symptoms like pain, nausea or fatigue are often not visible.

This can make it difficult for people with migraine to be believed, many having been met with the phrase, “but you look fine!”

For others, like Sarah who experiences hemiplegic migraine, symptoms like one-sided weakness or balance issues, aren’t well recognised as migraine symptoms.

“At the age of around 16 after spending time in hospital with migraine, I had to use a walking stick because it caused such issues with my balance and with walking. People were questioning and saying, “but isn’t migraine just a headache?”

Here, Sarah tells us about how the Sunflower has helped her with feeling believed:

“It’s a really important tool for me to use as someone that can have very sudden migraine attacks, particularly as my speech can be impacted – it helps me to communicate.”

🌻 Part of the world's longest Sunflower lanyard has made its way to Manchester Fashion Week.

In 2023, our community made 2,917 submissions representing 867 different non-visible disabilities, conditions and chronic illnesses.

For every submission, we added one metre of lanyard, and another metre for each different reason identified.

The finished lanyard measured 3,784.50 metres and set the world record for the longest lanyard at Anfield.

Since then, the list has continued to grow. We have now received more than 26,000 submissions, representing 935 different non-visible disabilities, conditions and chronic illnesses.

Victoria Jenkins, founder of Unhidden, reimagined part of the record-breaking lanyard as a festival cape.

It was revealed as part of Unhidden's show at Manchester Fashion Week at VERSA Manchester Studios.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood condition that can cause episodes of severe pain, fatigue and other health complications. Many of these experiences are not immediately visible, and support needs can vary from day to day.

Around 7.74 million people worldwide were living with Sickle Cell Disease in 2021, yet understanding and access to appropriate support remain unequal around the world.

At Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, we’re proud to support greater awareness, understanding and inclusion for people living with Sickle Cell Disease and other non-visible disabilities.
