While TCM has developed and spread all over Asia, China and in Vietnam, it has deep connections with local indigenous medicine practice. The traditional medicine practice in Vietnam is divided into Thuốc Bắc and Thuốc Nam.
Thuốc Bắc translates to Medicine from the North and relies on the classical Chinese formulas and imported herbs. While Thuốc Nam is Medicine from the South and has roots in indigenous folk medicine. It has its roots directly in the kitchen and the local produce. Historically, remedies were passed down by word of mouth. Healers weren’t people in white coats; they were members of the tribes and communities who knew exactly how to use the leaves, flowers, and roots for health.
That is the essence of Thuốc Nam: using what the local earth provides to heal your family.
One of plants in both Thuốc Bắc and Thuốc Nam is Honeysuckle (known in TCM as Jin Yin Hua or Kim Ngân Hoa in Vietnamese). It’s a perfect herb for hot days.
