When we start therapy together, one of my first questions isn’t always about your past...it’s about your sleep, your movement, and your fuel.

As a psychologist, I view these three pillars as important foundations required for any successful psychological intervention. Whether we are doing CBT for anxiety or EMDR for trauma, we are asking your brain to do incredibly heavy lifting.

If these foundations are missing, we are essentially trying to build a house with no base. Here is why I prioritise these three areas first:

1️⃣ Sleep is when your brain processes emotional data and clears out metabolic waste. Without adequate REM sleep, the amygdala (your brain's alarm system) becomes hyper-reactive. It is nearly impossible to think rationally or process trauma when your brain is physically stuck in a state of high alert due to exhaustion.

2️⃣ Nutrition
Your brain & body is a chemical factory. It requires nutrients and energy to function. If food is inconsistent or poor, the factory cannot produce the chemicals you need to feel regulated, focused, or calm.

3️⃣ Exercise
Exercise can be the release valve on a pressure cooker; it lets the built-up tension of the week escape so it doesn't lead to an explosion or burnout. Physical movement breaks the cycle of autonomic arousal, providing a physiological outlet for the fight or flight response triggered by trauma or stress.

I ask about these things because I respect the work we are doing. By stabilising your physiology first, we widen your Window of Tolerance. This ensures that when we dive into the deeper therapeutic work, you have the internal resources and the neural resilience to actually heal, rather than just survive.

When I first moved to the Netherlands, I remember the overwhelming need to absorb information and navigate the practicalities of a new country. During that time, IamExpat in the Netherlands was an invaluable resource and a place where I found reliable, trustworthy information when I needed it most.

That is why I am so pleased to announce that I am now officially listed among the psychologists on their resource lists. This feels like a significant milestone for Foxglove Therapy and myself because it reinforces a sense of belonging and confirms my commitment to being part of a larger community dedicated to supporting others.

Whether I am working with children and young people or mentoring fellow therapists as they navigate their own journeys abroad, being part of this network allows me to better serve the community I’ve come to call home.

I wanted to do another follow on post from something I shared last week. Every week a client can learn something new and often they are not alone in the difficulty they are trying to navigate.

So back by popular demand: Part 2 of real-life insights my clients have walked away with recently. 🔍

Talking with a fellow psychologist last week, we both commented that the lessons clients learn in therapy can also be reminders for us too. We have a special job in supporting others and helping clients to discovery more about themselves. This in turn provides us with these pearls of wisdoms that we learn from too.🧠

I wanted to share with you some of the insights clients have taken from their sessions this week, because many of these discoveries can be important for others to know too. 🔍

A little morning view from the Dutch countryside to remind you that your pace is okay. If things feel heavy lately, remember that you don't have to carry it all alone.

Nature doesn't rush, so why are you? Take your time. Pause. Breathe.

Have you been outside today? ☀️

This morning I chose to get out of bed and go out on my bicycle. It may have been early, I may have been tired, it may have take a lot of motivation to crawl out of bed but the results...a beautiful morning which stayed with me the rest of the day.

Getting outside and really noticing what is going on around you can have such a positive impact on our day. Notice the change in seasons, feel the sun or breeze on your skin, notice nature around you. 🌳

One extra thing I do is also smile at the people I come across and wave at fellow cyclists 👋

The Foundation of the Future 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

Childhood is the foundation for everything that follows, and significant events during these years can deeply impact how a child develops and sees the world. I recently attended multi-day training on how EMDR can be used to treat children when they have experienced something frightening.

Here are some of the statements that stuck with me

How often are we actually listened to? 👂

In my practice, I’ve seen how feeling unheard can breed deep-seated beliefs that we don't matter. The need to be listened to and to be heard can therefore be a powerful tool to help someone.

My latest blog post explores why resisting the urge to "fix" and instead offering curious, non-judgmental listening is the most validating gift you can give.
