In Gestalt Psychotherapy, awareness does not begin in the mind.
It begins in sensation.
Margherita Spagnuolo Lobb wrote “the word is born from the body”, a way of saying that language does not come first as an abstract idea; it emerges from lived, embodied experience. Before we can name what we feel, the body has already registered it in the way we breathe, move, withdraw, reach, or hold ourselves.
Before we can explain, the body has already begun to speak:
through a breath that shortens,
through shoulders that rise,
through a stomach that tightens,
through a jaw that clenches,
through eyes that avert,
through a posture that leans away,
through hands that fidget,
through tears that arrive before words,
through the subtle movements of contact,
approaching, pausing, retreating, softening.

Perhaps awareness is the willingness to stay with sensation long enough for meaning to emerge.
