Your body is locked in Eternal Summer, which has only directive is: Store everything!
Three hundred years ago, food scarcity was the default. Abundance was seasonal - a few months of harvest, then winter. Your body learned to read certain signals as "this is temporary, store everything." Those signals were:
1️⃣ Abundance (food is everywhere)
2️⃣ Density (calorie-dense food appears)
3️⃣ Frequency (you're grazing all day long)
Together, they send one message to your ancient nervous system: "We are standing in a berry field at peak harvest. Lock down. Store everything. This won't last."
Modern life triggers all three simultaneously. Every single day.
But here's the mechanism most people miss: your metabolism can only run in one mode at a time. You are either in Storage Mode or Burning Mode. Never both. It's a bank vault set to "deposit only." Once that mode is locked in, the withdrawal door doesn't exist.
Think about the difference between grapes and raisins. Same food. Same nutrients. But 50 grams of grapes is about 30 calories. 50 grams of raisins - dried, concentrated - is about 200 calories. Seven times the density. Your body doesn't care that it's "healthy." It reads that density as a powerful signal: this is the season, store.
Or think about frequency. Grazing and snacking throughout the day mimics standing in a berry bush picking all day. Your body reads the continuous stream of food as "the season never ended." Storage mode stays locked.
The cruel part is that Storage Mode doesn't feel like you're storing fat. It feels normal. Your body is just quietly redirecting every calorie toward the vault.
Then you wonder why "calories in, calories out" stopped working. Why you can eat "normally" and still gain weight.
Because your body isn't broken. It's operating exactly as designed. It's in Storage Mode, and Storage Mode has a different energy budget than Burning Mode.
Most people try to fix this by forcing a "Winter" - they diet. And that triggers the second ancient signal, the one where your discipline becomes the weapon your body uses against you. I'll break down why next.
Now - the instinct after reading this is to think: "Okay, so I just need to avoid processed foods and snacking."
That's the right direction. But direction alone doesn't get you there.
Cutting out snacks is smart. But "eat cleaner" isn't a strategy. Without precision, you're removing some of the signals but not enough to actually flip the switch. You put in 80% of the effort for 5% of the results - because one or two of the three signals is still firing.
The difference between frustration and results is removing the exact combination of signals that flips your body from Storage Mode to Burning Mode - so that with the right effort, you get all of the results. Not most. All.
The system won't cooperate until the input is exact - and exact is nearly impossible to dial in by feel.
