How would you speak to a friend who was struggling with exactly what you're struggling with?
Would you criticise her for not coping better? Tell her she should be doing more? Remind her of everything she got wrong?
Most of us would offer understanding, perspective and encouragement instead.
Yet we can hold ourselves to a completely different standard. We can be remarkably patient with others, and far harsher with ourselves, holding ourselves to standards we'd never expect from anyone else, and treating a normal mistake as proof of failure rather than simply being human.
Though self-criticism can sometimes feel like motivation, when it becomes a constant internal pressure, it can contribute to stress, anxiety, overthinking and emotional exhaustion. The nervous system responds to how we relate to ourselves too. From a neuroscience perspective, self-criticism keeps the nervous system in a low-grade state of alert, much like it would respond to any other perceived threat. Self-compassion works differently, t engages the body's own soothing system, lowering stress and creating a genuine sense of safety, not just a comforting thought.
Self-compassion doesn't mean becoming complacent or abandoning your standards. It means creating a more supportive relationship with yourself, one that makes it easier to think clearly, recover from setbacks and make positive changes.
This is an important part of the work in solution-focused hypnotherapy, where we focus on helping the brain develop more useful and supportive patterns rather than trying to change through self-judgement.
Rather than relying on willpower to "think more kindly," we work with the subconscious mind and nervous system, so self-compassion becomes something the body recognises, not just an idea to remember.
Kindness toward yourself isn't indulgent. It's the foundation everything else is built on.
As Kristin Neff writes, "with self-compassion, we give ourselves the same kindness and care we'd give to a good friend."
