How would you speak to a friend who was struggling with exactly what you're struggling with?
Would you criticise her for not coping better? Tell her she should be doing more? Remind her of everything she got wrong?
Most of us would offer understanding, perspective and encouragement instead.
Yet we can hold ourselves to a completely different standard. We can be remarkably patient with others, and far harsher with ourselves, holding ourselves to standards we'd never expect from anyone else, and treating a normal mistake as proof of failure rather than simply being human.
Though self-criticism can sometimes feel like motivation, when it becomes a constant internal pressure, it can contribute to stress, anxiety, overthinking and emotional exhaustion. The nervous system responds to how we relate to ourselves too. From a neuroscience perspective, self-criticism keeps the nervous system in a low-grade state of alert, much like it would respond to any other perceived threat. Self-compassion works differently, t engages the body's own soothing system, lowering stress and creating a genuine sense of safety, not just a comforting thought.
Self-compassion doesn't mean becoming complacent or abandoning your standards. It means creating a more supportive relationship with yourself, one that makes it easier to think clearly, recover from setbacks and make positive changes.
This is an important part of the work in solution-focused hypnotherapy, where we focus on helping the brain develop more useful and supportive patterns rather than trying to change through self-judgement.
Rather than relying on willpower to "think more kindly," we work with the subconscious mind and nervous system, so self-compassion becomes something the body recognises, not just an idea to remember.
Kindness toward yourself isn't indulgent. It's the foundation everything else is built on.
As Kristin Neff writes, "with self-compassion, we give ourselves the same kindness and care we'd give to a good friend."

One of the most useful changes therapy can create is not necessarily changing the situation, but changing how you are able to experience and respond to it.

One client described noticing exactly this:
"The sessions... really helped me learn how to step back and see differently situations that were too stressful for me to handle before."

When we're stressed or anxious, our thinking can become narrower. The brain is focused on managing the perceived threat, making it harder to access perspective, flexibility and calm problem-solving.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy helps support the brain and nervous system out of these automatic stress patterns. As things settle, it can become easier to step back, see the bigger picture and respond with more choice.

If you are curious about whether solution-focused hypnotherapy could help you develop that kind of capacity, you're welcome to book a Complimentary Initial Consultation. It's a free 40-minute video call.

So many of the people I work with describe themselves as "just an overthinker" — like it's simply part of their personality, something they've always had to live with.

But constantly running scenarios, replaying conversations, and pre-empting problems before they've even happened isn't really a personality trait. It's a nervous system that's learned to stay switched on, just in case. Over time, that shows up as poor sleep, difficulty relaxing, and a quiet exhaustion that doesn't lift, even on the good days.

From a neuroscience perspective, this pattern is often the nervous system staying in a state of alert long after the original stress has passed. The brain keeps scanning ahead, because that's the job it's learned to do.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy works with this directly. Alongside the conscious, thinking mind, we also work with the subconscious and the nervous system, helping the whole system learn that it's safe to settle, rather than simply being told to relax.

Overthinking isn't who you are. It's often just where your nervous system has learned to live.

Living in a new country has a way of quietly testing things you never thought to question. How you read a room. What confidence is supposed to look like. Even what feels normal to say out loud, or to feel.

None of that means anything was wrong before. It's that patterns which worked seamlessly in one context don't always translate smoothly into another, and that gap is often where anxiety, self-doubt or a sense of disorientation start to creep in, even for people who feel settled on the surface.

From a neuroscience perspective, these patterns aren't just habits of thought. They're learned nervous system responses, built up over years in a specific context, which is part of why reasoning your way through a new one doesn't always work on its own.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy works with exactly this. Not just the thoughts on the surface, but the deeper patterns underneath them, helping the nervous system build new, flexible ways of responding, so what once felt automatic can adapt to where you are now.

Wherever those patterns came from, you get to decide how they show up from here.

Many of the challenges we face aren't random, they're often driven by patterns we've learned over years, sometimes without even realising it.

Our automatic thoughts, emotional responses, and habits can quietly influence our decisions, relationships, and wellbeing. When we aren't aware of these patterns, it can feel as though life is simply "happening to us."

Carl Jung captured this idea beautifully:
"What is not brought to consciousness comes to us as fate."

Hypnotherapy isn't about losing control or uncovering mystical secrets. It's about increasing awareness of the unconscious processes that shape our lives, giving you the opportunity to respond differently instead of repeating the same cycles.

Awareness creates choice.
Choice creates change.

One of the first things people often notice when their mental wellbeing improves is that they begin sleeping better.

Not because they've found the perfect bedtime routine, but because their nervous system no longer feels like it has to stay on high alert.

One client was happy to share in her review:
"My nonexistent sleeping pattern has become increasingly more consistent."

When we're living with chronic stress, anxiety or overthinking, the brain can struggle to switch from alertness into genuine rest. Solution-focused hypnotherapy helps by reducing these stress patterns and supporting the brain's natural ability to settle.

Better sleep is often not the goal in itself. It is one of the signs that the mind is beginning to function in a calmer, healthier way.

One of the most meaningful signs of burnout recovery is not necessarily doing less.

It is no longer believing that your worth depends on how much you accomplish.

This client's reflection captures that beautifully:

"I'm noticing that I'm no longer measuring every day by how much I got done."

When we live under prolonged stress, the brain can become conditioned to equate productivity with safety, approval or self-worth. Over time, constantly pushing ourselves begins to feel normal, even when it leaves us exhausted.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy helps calm the nervous system and shift these deeply learned patterns. As the brain becomes less driven by chronic stress, many people notice they think more clearly, feel calmer and are able to enjoy life without constantly judging themselves by their productivity.

Does your mind ever feel full, even when nothing is particularly wrong?

Perhaps you find yourself replaying conversations, worrying about the future, carrying responsibility for others, or struggling to fully switch off, even when you're trying to relax.

One of the things that surprises many people is that overthinking is often not a lack of understanding. In fact, many people who struggle with it are incredibly self-aware.

They already know what's happening.

The challenge is often that certain patterns have become automatic, making it difficult to simply "think your way out" of them.

In this short video, I talk about why creating change is often about more than just understanding the problem.

I'd be interested to know in the comments if this resonates with you and what overthinking look like for you.

Many people, particularly those who are capable, conscientious and high-achieving, learn early on to prioritise functioning over feeling.

They become skilled at coping, managing and carrying on. Yet underneath that competence, there is often a nervous system holding far more stress and emotional pressure than others realise.

Psychologically and neurologically, emotions are not interruptions to ignore. They are information. When emotions are repeatedly pushed aside, the nervous system remains activated in the background, which can contribute to anxiety, overthinking, exhaustion and burnout over time.

Healthy emotional regulation is not about becoming consumed by feelings, but about learning how to acknowledge and process them without fear or avoidance.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy supports this by helping the brain and nervous system move out of chronic stress patterns, allowing greater emotional balance, mental clarity and resilience.
