📱 TECH CORNER: Simple Tech Tips for Older Kiwis
Technology doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are two simple tips from Senior Gadget Guide that can make everyday technology easier — and safer — for older people and their families.
👓 Make the text on your phone bigger in under a minute
If you find yourself squinting at your phone or reaching for your glasses just to read a message, you can make the text bigger — no new phone needed!
On an iPhone:
Open Settings
Tap Display & Brightness
Tap Text Size
Move the slider to the right until it feels comfortable.
Want it even bigger? Go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text.
On an Android phone (including Samsung, Oppo and most others):
Open Settings
Tap Display
Tap Font size (or Font size and style)
Adjust the size until it’s comfortable to read.
You can also make the text bold, which many people find easier on the eyes.
There’s no “right” size — choose whatever feels comfortable for you. 😊
🚨 The 3-question test before tapping a text link
Scam texts are a common trick, and they can pretend to come from a courier, bank, NZTA or even someone you know.
Before tapping a link, ask yourself:
1. Was I expecting this?
If a message arrives out of the blue about a parcel, payment or prize, be cautious.
2. Is it asking me to tap, pay or share details?
If it wants money, passwords or personal information, stop and check first.
3. Can I check another way?
Don’t use the link in the message. Contact the organisation using a phone number or website you already know and trust. If it appears to be from family, call them on their usual number.
If something doesn’t feel right, don’t reply and don’t tap the link.
You can forward suspicious texts to 7726 for free to report them. You can also contact Netsafe for free, confidential advice.
