🌿 Hauora Report Series | Putāruru 🌿

The realities of rural healthcare can make it difficult for Putāruru whānau to access timely care close to home.

Our latest Hauora Report also identifies the strengths already present across the community, including strong local leadership, trusted providers and capability that can be built on to improve hauora outcomes.

Maria Te Kanawa, CEO of Raukawa Charitable Trust, outlines what is needed next: more care delivered locally, greater investment in the health workforce and a stronger focus on prevention.

This must be supported by action to address the inequities experienced by Māori and whānau living in communities with high levels of deprivation, alongside stronger partnerships and navigator support.

Putāruru knows what it needs. Progress depends on working alongside the community and investing in its capability to keep more care local.

Putāruru is a strong, connected rural community, but whānau continue to face barriers to timely, local and culturally safe healthcare.

We are calling for:
1️⃣ Bringing care closer to home
2️⃣ Investment in the local health workforce
3️⃣ Action to address health inequities experienced by Māori and whānau living in communities with high levels of deprivation
4️⃣ Stronger community partnerships and navigator support

These findings reinforce the need for solutions designed alongside Putāruru whānau, iwi and local providers, supported by sustainable, long-term investment.

Our Paeroa Hauora Report identifies the structural pressures affecting the community’s ability to sustain local care and respond before health needs become more serious.

Workforce shortages, housing insecurity, short-term funding for iwi-led services and disconnected data systems make it harder to plan ahead and provide coordinated support for whānau.

We are calling for:
1️⃣ A rural health workforce grown in Hauraki
2️⃣ Warm, dry homes treated as health infrastructure
3️⃣ Long-term investment in proven iwi-led care
4️⃣ Shared data, coordinated services and intergenerational support

Addressing these priorities will help strengthen local care, support earlier intervention and improve hauora outcomes across generations.

For many whānau across Ōtorohanga, getting the care they need can mean significant travel, time and cost.

Our Tumu Whakarae Brandi Hudson reflects on what we heard through the Ōtorohanga Hauora Report, including the increasing pressure of fuel costs and recurring appointments, and the challenge of travelling to Te Kūiti or Waikato Hospital while balancing mahi, childcare and wider whānau responsibilities.

The report also highlights growing needs around diabetes and foot care, alongside the importance of supporting kaumātua and an ageing rural population closer to home.

Te Tiratū is already exploring practical responses, including training pathways that could strengthen local foot care support, with more information on this mahi to come.

Our Ōtorohanga report sets out a wider range of solutions for bringing care closer to whānau, strengthening rural services and reducing the barriers created by distance.

🌤️ Hauora Report Series | Ōtorohanga 🌤️

Our Ōtorohanga Hauora Report highlights the realities of accessing healthcare across a large rural area, where Ōtorohanga acts as an important service hub for whānau from surrounding communities, including Waitomo and Kāwhia.
There are many strengths across the rohe, including strong whakapapa and community connections.

But we acknowledge whānau are also navigating rising transport costs, workforce pressures and limited local access to diagnostics and specialist services.

We are calling for:
1️⃣ A shift from crisis response to prevention.
2️⃣ Restoration of local diagnostic access.
3️⃣ AOD, rangatahi and maternal supports locally.
4️⃣ Supported rural workforce, navigation and system flexibility.

These changes would help bring care closer to home, support whānau earlier and build a rural health system that works around the realities of whānau.

Earlier this month, we joined rangatahi from across the Waikato at Tai Ora Huihuinga 2026, held at the Claudelands Events Centre.

A special thank you to Taniora and Maria and the wider team of Te Puna Waananga o Wairere for organising this symposium where rangatahi could connect, kōrero and share their whakaaro about hauora and wellbeing.

Across our rohe, we all have a role in supporting smokefree and vapefree communities and helping ensure to***co and va**ng laws are followed.

Concerns can be reported about underage sales, disposable vapes, illicit to***co, unlawful advertising or displays, and smoking or va**ng in regulated workplaces and public spaces.
