We are the Iwi Māori Partnership Board for the Tainui waka rohe, who aim to empower whānau voice and advocate for transformational change of the health system, for the betterment of our people.

💨 Our Position Statement on Va**ng 💨

Kia ora e te whānau. Rangatahi deserve protection from ni****ne addiction, not products designed to exploit them.

In this kōrero, our expert technical advisor, Associate Professor Anaru Waa (Ngāti Hine) from the University of Otago, shares our position.

Rangatahi need to be centred in va**ng policy, and stronger regulation is needed to limit unregulated supply reaching them.

🌿 Early diabetes support can help protect our hauora 🌿

Dr Ryan Paul reminds us that small steps, taken early, can make a real difference.

If you or your whānau are living with diabetes, you can talk with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist about what support may help.

That could include staying on schedule with your prescribed medicines, checking blood pressure, looking after your feet and finding simple ways to keep moving.

Kia ora e te whānau!

Our Co-Chair Tipa Mahuta has responded to Budget 2026 based on what you're sharing with us at the flaxroots.

Health funding needs to reach the frontline services whānau rely on.

In our whānau surveys for those living in the Tainui waka rohe, we keep hearing from whānau facing long waits, travel barriers, workforce shortages and limited access to timely care, especially in rural communities.

We support investment in health, and we ​will be keeping a close eye on whether the proposed budget makes a real difference close to home through primary care, kaupapa Māori providers, rural and mobile services, rangatahi mental health, prevention and whānau-centred care.

These medicines help prevent dialysis, amputations, heart attacks and early death for our whānau. ❤️

Pharmac is proposing to remove priority access of type 2 diabetes medication for Māori and Pacific whānau in favour of 'universalism'.

Te Tiratū is opposed and filing a submission. Meanwhile our expert advisor on prescription medicine, Dr Leanne Te Karu has put pen to paper.

She believes equal treatment does not always mean fair access, especially when whānau already face unequal barriers in the health system.

What matters to our rangatahi? Whānau, culture, sport, kapa haka, kai, sleep, friends, marae, and time in the taiao.

Where are the gaps they see? Mental health, dealing with school pressure, housing, transport, social media, va**ng, and access to support.

We wish to awhi Ngāti Maniapoto Marae PACT Trust upcoming wānanga.

Our communities are ageing fast. In Hauraki, around 30% of people are now over 65 (up from 27% in 2018).

Areas like Thames to Whitianga and Waihi are seeing the highest numbers of kaumātua in the Tainui waka rohe.

As demand for support grows, whānau-led mātauranga is more important than ever.

Diabetes is one of the most common and serious health issues affecting whānau across Aotearoa.

Listen to Dr Ryan Paul explain the scale of diabetes in Aotearoa, and how it can contribute to major health complications, including heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, and amputations.

Always remember, your doctor or Hauora provider is there to help you and to answer your questions about different medicines you could try, health checks you could have, and other supports that can help prevent complications and keep you well.

Small everyday choices matter too! Stay active, make healthier kai choices where you can, and try to cut back on the sugary drinks.

🤲 Kia ora e te whānau 🤲

Last month, 65 whānau shared their whakaaro on the health system through our Whānau Voice surveys.

We heard a range of themes:
It takes too long to access care.
Transport cost increases mean whānau are having to weigh up the cost of even attending an appointment.
Cold, damp homes make it an uphill battle to stay healthy, and,
As the seasons change, there are too few resources and support mechanisms to support the overwhelming tasks of managing asthma, diabetes, mental health, and tamariki illness.

They also know what helps them stay well.

🏡 Marae.
🚶 Walking.
🤲 Rongoā.
✨ Being together.

E mihi ana to everyone who shared their whakaaro. will be using these insights to continue our mahi, advocating for positive health system change.
