Who’d keep things going if you weren’t here?

That’s what life cover is for. If you die, it pays a one-off amount to the people you choose. Many policies also pay out early if you’re terminally ill.

Your family can use it for whatever they need. The mortgage, other debts, the funeral, or keeping the kids’ lives going.

You’ll usually answer some health questions first, and some things can be left out. Every insurer is different.

What if a serious illness stopped you in your tracks?

That’s what trauma cover is for. If you’re diagnosed with an illness on your policy’s list, like some cancers, a heart attack or a stroke, it usually pays you a one-off amount.

You can use it for whatever helps. The bills, treatment costs, time off to get better, or so your partner can be there.

It only pays for conditions on your policy’s list, and how serious it has to be varies. Something you already had might be left out. Every insurer is different.

Break your wrist and ACC will sort it, right? Well, sort of.

ACC helps pay for treatment after an accident. If you can’t work, it may pay up to 80% of your income. But life still costs money while you heal. Think taxis, or a bit of help at home.

That’s where accidental injury cover comes in. If you get hurt and the injury is on your policy’s list, it usually pays you a one-off amount. It usually pays on top of ACC, depending on your policy, and you can spend it on whatever helps.

ACC usually only pays a lump sum for life-long injuries. So a bone that heals usually won’t get one.

It only pays for injuries on the list, and every insurer’s list is different. It’s one of The Insurance Team’s favourite covers.

Could you pay the bills if you got sick and couldn’t work for a while?

Welcome to Cover explained, our new weekly series. One type of cover each week, in plain words.

Income protection pays you part of your income each month if you get sick or hurt and can’t work.

You pick how long to wait before it starts. Choose a wait your sick leave and savings can get you through.
ACC is for accidents. If you get sick, it usually won’t pay.

Accidental injury cover is a handy add-on. It pays a one-off sum for listed injuries, on top of ACC. More on that soon.

Sick, not injured? ACC might not cover you.

ACC is for accidents. If an accident stops you working, ACC can pay up to 80% of your wages. If you get sick there’s usually no ACC money.

Sick leave is 10 days a year once you’ve been with your employer for 6 months. A serious illness could mean months off work.

Income protection can pay part of your income each month after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working.

A lot of people tick straight past it….

It’s a consent box. It says your adviser is allowed to see what’s going back and forth between you and the insurer.

If it isn’t ticked, they deal with you directly and we see none of it. So when there’s a delay, or a letter turns up that doesn’t make sense, or they’ve asked you for something and you don’t know what they mean, you’re working that out on your own. And we don’t even know it’s happening.

So if you do need to ever make a claim, come to us first. We’ll help you through the form/process and be there with you during journey. 💛
