Supporting someone you love can be incredibly meaningful — but it can also be challenging.

You don't have to navigate it alone.

Reach out to the people around you. Ask for practical help. Talk about how you're doing. Connect with services when you need to such as us here at Family Link.

And remember:

You can care for someone else while making space to care for yourself.

🌿 You matter too.

Sometimes we notice everyone else's needs before we notice our own.

Checking in with yourself doesn't have to be complicated.

It might simply mean pausing and asking:

“How am I doing?”

If you're feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or like you're struggling to cope, consider talking to someone you trust or seeking additional support.

🌿 Looking after yourself isn't something you earn once everything else is sorted. You matter now.

When someone close to us is struggling, we can sometimes feel guilty for having fun, making plans or simply enjoying ourselves.

But you don't need to put your own life on hold.

Small moments of enjoyment, connection and rest aren't selfish.

They can help replenish your energy and remind you that your identity is bigger than the challenges happening around you.

Boundaries can be especially difficult when we're worried about someone we love.

We might fear that saying no means we're abandoning them.

But healthy relationships have limits.

You can care about someone while protecting your own time, energy and wellbeing.

And sometimes, having a clear boundary actually makes it easier to continue being there in a sustainable way.

🌿Caring for yourself and caring for someone else don't have to be opposites.

When someone we care about is struggling, it can be easy to feel like it's our responsibility to make things better.

But supporting someone doesn't mean you have to become their entire support system.

It's okay to ask:

“What is mine to carry, and what isn't?”

Sharing the load can protect your own wellbeing while still allowing you to be there for the person you care about.

🌿 Support doesn't have to mean carrying the whole load.
