Did you know that the National Bowel Screening Programme is free for eligible people aged 58–74 years? 🤔

It helps find changes early — often before symptoms appear — when treatment is most effective. 🙏

What happens:
If you are eligible, you will be automatically sent a screening kit in the mail. 📨 The screening uses a simple at-home test called a FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test). It checks for tiny traces of blood in your bowel motion that you can’t see.

How it works:
📩 A kit is sent to your whare
🏠 You complete it in your own time
📦 You return it for laboratory testing
📄 Results are usually available within a few weeks

👉 Negative: no blood detected — repeat screening in 2 years
👉 Positive: blood detected — further tests (usually a colonoscopy) are needed. This does not automatically mean cancer

💡 If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible, or if you notice any changes or symptoms, have a kōrero with our clinic team:

Tēnei te mihi ki a kollective kindness for the koha of pyjamas for our whānau 💜

As the colder season sets in, this kindness brings warmth, comfort, and aroha to our whānau. These will be truly loved and deeply appreciated.

A heartfelt ngā mihi nui to Kindness Collective Foundation for supporting our tamariki and whānau across Aotearoa this winter. We truly value your mahi, this beautiful Kaupapa, and this meaningful koha. 🌿

Mate pukupuku kōpiro (bowel cancer) symptoms can come and go, and are often easy to ignore — but it’s important not to brush them aside.

Signs to look out for include:
🩸 Bleeding from the bottom
🚽 Changes in bowel habits
🔋 Anaemia or iron deficiency
🤕 Persistent abdominal pain
⚠️ A lump in the abdomen
😴 Unexplained tiredness or weight loss

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, don’t be whakamā, and don’t put it off. Have a kōrero with your tākuta (GP).

Early detection and seeking support early can make all the difference.

A heartfelt congratulations to Janice Kuka, Chairperson of Te Manu Toroa and CEO of our collective partner Nga Mataapuna Oranga, on being appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours.

This is a truly well-deserved recognition of her exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and lifelong commitment to Māori hauora and whānau wellbeing. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this achievement and to acknowledge the incredible impact she continues to make across our hapori.

Today, we proudly celebrate an extraordinary achievement by our CEO, Janice Kuka, who has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours for her outstanding services to Māori health.

Whaea Janice has been a tireless champion for whānau, a visionary leader in Māori health, and a passionate advocate for equity and self-determination in healthcare. Through her commitment, courage, and compassion, she has helped shape stronger, healthier futures for countless whānau and communities.

Her leadership continues to inspire those around her, and her impact reaches far beyond the organisations and communities she serves. This recognition reflects not only her remarkable achievements, but also the profound difference she has made in the lives of so many people over the past four decades.

Ko koe te tauihu o tō waka auahi kore.
You are the prow (front part of the ship) of your own waka, your own compass toward a smokefree destiny.

As World Smokefree Month comes to an end, we’re proud of all our whānau who have taken steps on their smokefree journey this May. 😍

Some of the kōrero we’ve heard from whānau about their why:
- I decided to quit smoking for my health, wellbeing and my daughter.
- It’s being able to say, ‘I don’t smoke anymore.’ My son is like, ‘I’m so proud of you and dad.’

What would your why be for taking that first step? 🤔
