One of my daughters hurt her foot yesterday morning - hurt it enough that we knew we needed an X-ray and a doctor. As any parent knows, the experience of going to any form of an accident and emergency clinic can be so sh*tty. I was not looking forward it but Trav and I quickly made plans on how to look after our little ones, gathered snacks and books (and phone… coz teenager 🙄) and off my daughter and I went, hoping to get ahead of the queue.

And you know what, we didn’t have to wait that long to see the triage nurse and you know what was even more important than that? It was that the triage nurse was so kind, she really ‘saw’ my daughter, she assumed the best, took great care and spent a moment to connect with another human 🧡 Back to the waiting room we went and wait we did and it made me emotional to see this woman truly ‘see’ each patient she called for - an injured old man, an sick little girl - always taking a moment to make a heart felt connection.

So thank you Triage nurse for looking after us, and everyone else and reminding me of the good in people and inspiring me to bring more heart- felt connections into my life too 🧡

As a parent of neurodivergent or sensitive kids, I think we need to accept that there are seasons where our energy is simply taken up with caring for our children.

Sometimes those seasons last weeks or months. Sometimes they last much, much longer.

And I think it’s so important that we don’t beat ourselves up for that.

We don’t need to feel ashamed or “less than” because we haven’t been making progress on our own goals, building the business, getting fit, keeping up with the house, or becoming the version of ourselves we thought we’d be by now.

Maybe this season is asking something different of us.

Maybe right now, looking after yourself, getting through the day, being there for your children and finding little moments of rest is enough.

And when things begin to shift — when you have a little more space, energy or desire — you can gently begin to find yourself again.

Not with a huge plan.
Not by catching up on everything you feel you’ve missed.

Just baby steps.

A walk.
A book.
Something creative.
A little time alone.
Remembering what makes you feel like you.

And slowly, in your own time, finding your own rhythm again.

There is no deadline for becoming yourself again. 🤍

Meltdowns and tears used to feel like something I needed to stop.

I wanted to fix them, calm them, make them go away.

Over time, I’ve come to see them differently.

Often, they’re our children’s way of releasing what’s been building inside. A way for their nervous system to move through big feelings and find its way back to calm.

When I can remember that, everything changes.

Instead of trying to stop the storm, I focus on being a safe place within it.

That doesn’t mean it’s easy. There are still moments when I feel stretched, tired or unsure.

But learning more about child development, understanding my own nervous system, and gently unpacking the beliefs I carried from my own childhood has changed the way I show up.

Sometimes I even smile when the tears come.

Not because I enjoy seeing my child upset, but because I know that, more often than not, they’ll feel lighter on the other side.

If you’re in the thick of it today, I hope this reminds you that your calm presence matters more than having all the answers.

I’d love to know… has your understanding of meltdowns changed over time too?

One of the things I notice most in parents of sensitive and neurodivergent children is how much they’re carrying.

They’re supporting their child through anxiety, aggression, overwhelm and big emotions… while often pushing aside their own.

I’ve learned that becoming the parent we want to be isn’t about trying harder or getting it right all the time. It’s about gently understanding our own nervous system, our patterns and the stories we’ve carried with us.

As we find more calm and capacity within ourselves, we create more space for connection with our children too.

💛 If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear what part spoke to you.

And if you’re looking for a space where you can feel supported, my Parent Support Sessions are open. Send me a DM if you’d like to know more.

Independent play is so helpful for sensitive kids.

Regulating, grounding, imaginative, creative, where the body can work through feelings…

As parents we need to make space for play, hold the discomfort before they can settle into play and try not to interrupt it when they’re in ‘the zone’.

Honestly, making sure you’re all not too busy to play is probably the most important thing.

As the heartbreaking landslide disaster hangs very heavy over our home town, there is so much to say. Today I want to talk about supporting our kids processing what’s happened.

We sometimes have a tendency to try to protect our kids kids from traumatic events (especially our sensitive ones) by not talking about it, glossing over it or ignoring it. The thing is though, they of course will hear all about it through the media, through other kids and other adults. Sensitive kids in particular often also pick up on the unspoken stress of those around them and energy of the community.

Create some space to explain things to your kids, in your words, based on your values and at a level that intuitively works for your kiddo. Make sure they understand they can ask any questions at any time - even weeks from now. Don’t assume you know what they’re thinking - often kids have a different way of seeing the world and might have some concerns on that basis. Talk about the helpers and community love and support alongside the disaster. See if there are ways your family can help and process in your own unique way (tears, movement, stories, talking, community support)

AND sensitive kids often belong to sensitive parents, so check in with your own mind and body. What do you need to help process this tragedy?

Our love and support is with the victims and their family and friends as well as those working hard at the site.

Let’s go gently with ourselves and others 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
