The calf that teaches you the most...
If there's one lesson we've learnt over years of calf rearing, it's this:
Never walk past a fussy feeder.
Most calves race to the feeder when they're feeling bright and healthy. So when one hangs back, drinks slowly, or doesn't seem interested, it's worth taking a closer look.
It doesn't always mean something is seriously wrong but it is the calf that's asking for a little more attention.
We've found that the best calf rearers are often the ones who notice the small changes:
- A calf that's a little quieter than normal.
- One that doesn't finish its milk.
- One that's slower to get up or join the group.
Taking the time to observe these calves early can make all the difference. Sometimes all they need is a little extra monitoring and support before they're back to their normal routine.
Good calf rearing isn't about reacting to problems, it's about noticing the little things before they become bigger ones.
Good observation, consistent routines, and sound management are the foundations of raising healthy, thriving calves.
