Today is the UN International Day of Care and Support – a day to acknowledge the paid and unpaid carers who show up, every day, for the people they love and the people they work alongside.

CCS Disability Action was born from exactly this kind of care. When polio epidemics swept Aotearoa in the mid-20th century, it was parents, grandparents, aunties, and uncles – whānau in the deepest sense – who refused to accept that their tamariki and young people had no place in their communities. That refusal became us. It still shapes everything our kaimahi do across the motu today.

With voting open in this year’s General Election we wanted to put out an idea for you to consider:

We believe that no person is born inherently vulnerable. People are instead made vulnerable by the systems, funding and social structures around them.

With that in mind, we'd love to hear whose needs will you consider when you cast your vote.

Everyone just wants a chance to show they can do the job, and do it well.

In Episode 42 of Books Beyond Barriers, “Take a Chance on Me,” Krissy Wright talks with Eleanor Blakey, career development practitioner, former marketer and advocate for neurodivergent people. Inspired by her own autistic son’s journey, Eleanor now helps young people and adults identify their strengths and build meaningful career pathways.

Eleanor and Krissy chat about when to start career conversations with teenagers, why it’s okay if the plan changes, and how small, practical adjustments at work can make a big difference.

We had an awesome turnout at our Hawke's Bay candidates forums! It was great to have so many people show up and engage with politicians.

National Disability Leadership Advisor Debbie Ward attended both events and shared a wrapup on our website (link in comments). "Disabled people and whānau showed up in numbers, asked hard questions, and refused to let candidates stay in the abstract," she said.

A huge thank you to all those involved behind the scenes who worked hard to make this happen, and of course to everyone who attended. We hope you're feeling encouraged to have your say this election.

Image descriptions:

2. Six politicians seated in chairs on a blue carpeted stage. One is holding a microphone. On the side are the MC, support staff and NZSL interpreter. Behind them is a CCS Disability Action branded flag sign.

On Sunday, several team members and people we support attended our Spring Concert in Wellington. Musicians Helene and Rolf Pohl were fantastic, and it was wonderful to connect with supporters of our mahi.

One of those was Dr Gill Greer (third photo), whose mother was a strong supporter of CCS Disability Action and started the Mobility Parking scheme in the 1970s. We're delighted to have had her present.

A big thank you to all involved in making this concert a success!

Image descriptions
1: Group photo of nine people standing together (except one person who is kneeling at the front), smiling. They are in a room with an ornate rug and yellow wall decorated with artworks.
2: The musicians performing in the same room. Helene is standing and playing the violin, while Rolf is seated, playing the cello.
3: Dr Gill Greer in conversation with a man and woman on either side of her.
4: Audience members clapping, seated on a wooden sofa with blue cushions and a patchwork quilt draped over the backrest.
