Red Door Recovery Co-Leader Justine Hamill joined ’s Morning Report to unpack a modern challenge hitting closer to home every day: our growing reliance on cellphones. 📱✨

Justine dives into screen dependency as a process addiction, shifting the focus away from the device itself and toward the underlying factors—like trauma, disconnection, and the need for self-soothing—that drive us to the screen.

Real recovery starts when we address the root causes of why we check out. Let’s build a healthier, more connected relationship with technology, together. 🚪❤️

A beautiful evening of connection, vulnerability, and healing at the NZ Defence Force Youth Development Unit (LSV)

Since 2022, Blain has been generously volunteering his time to share his journey with every Rōpu that comes through.

Moving forward, he is joined by Justine, bringing their unique and combined experience to empower our rangatahi even further. Planting seeds for healing & transformation for our at risk youth.

We were incredibly grateful to hear some of the young people’s stories—hearing how they are striving for better lives and fighting to break cycles within their whānau is deeply moving. The evening concluded in the best way possible: with karakia, kai, and kōrero.

We love giving back to our community and supporting this incredibly vital funded program for at-risk youth. A huge shoutout to the Whaea who lead this space—they are true pillars of strength with massive hearts.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved in such a powerful night. ❤️✨

Today the whare at Red Door Recovery was filled with wairua, kōrero and deep connection.

It was an honour to welcome Kevin Hollingsworth — Justine’s senior clinical lecturer for her postgraduate studies at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi , founder of the Mana Enhancing Stop M**h Awareness kaupapa in Rotorua, and currently completing his PhD on m**h harm in Aotearoa through a lived‑experience Māori lens.

Our tangata whaiora shared their journeys at Red Door with courage and honesty, and Kevin returned that taonga with his own lived experience story — his haerenga through m**h addiction, incarceration, healing, and the powerful place he stands today.

We closed with waiata, kai, aroha and kotahitanga, and our tangata whaiora were deeply inspired by his story.

The heart of Red Door was felt today.
He taonga te tangata. He taonga te kōrero.

An absolute privilege to stand together tonight at the inaugural launch of Brave Hearts NZ Wellington. 🌟
Bravehearts’ vital kaupapa is to support the whānau of those walking through addiction—a mission that deeply resonates with everything we do at Red Door.

Our own Blain and David took the stage to share their personal stories as father and son, opening up about their individual journeys and the very origins of how Red Door came to be.

The evening was beautifully MC’d by Lotta Dann Lotta Dann (Mrs D) (founder of Living Sober & Blueprint for Learning ), who brought her trademark lived experience, generous heart, and immense passion to the room. We were also incredibly privileged to hear from Sarah Helm of the NZ Drug Foundation

Our deepest gratitude goes to Erin, the founder of Bravehearts. Her journey of walking through addiction to recovery with her own son sparked a movement that now supports parents all over Aotearoa.

🤍 Community Support: Bravehearts will be running free community hui monthly right here in Wellington to support whānau in our region. You are not alone.
