We were honoured to welcome the team from Manatū Hauora | Ministry of Health led by Mrs Merivi Agalelei, Chief Advisor Pacific, and senior leaders from the Pacific Team, Manager of the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team (NZMAT) and team members.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to hear about the important work being undertaken nationally to improve health outcomes for Pacific communities, strengthen health system monitoring and equity, and ensure Pacific voices and priorities are reflected across policy and reporting in the health sector.

We also learned more about the vital role of NZMAT, New Zealand’s emergency health response team, which provides rapid medical assistance during national emergencies, disasters, and humanitarian events both in NZ and abroad. Their work helps ensure communities receive timely healthcare support when it is needed most.

We were equally proud to share the work Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley is delivering at the primary and community level to improve health and wellbeing for Pacific families and our wider communities.

A special point of pride for us is that three members of our nursing team have completed NZMAT training, developing the skills and capability to respond when Pacific communities need them most.

Partnerships like these remind us that strong health systems are built through collaboration, preparedness, and a shared commitment to serving people where they are.

Malo Aupito to the Ministry of Health team for visiting and for the inspiring discussions about the future of health and emergency preparedness in NZ and internationally.

Tonight we celebrated the completion of our 6-week Faith-Led Programme with the Hutt Valley Samoan Ward 🙌🏽

We are incredibly proud of our matua, who have achieved outstanding health results in such a short time. Through their commitment and faith they have made positive lifestyle changes and are now feeling confident and empowered to continue their health journeys independently. 💪🏽

Learning how healthy food choices can nourish the body and support long-term health.
🏃🏽‍♂️ FITNESS: Movement is Joy
Enjoying regular physical activity and discovering that movement can be both fun and rewarding.

Some of our highly skilled Primary Care Nursing Team are in Auckland attending the MedTech Explorer Showcase at AUT South Campus, where we were invited to present and host an information booth demonstrating how we are embracing innovation and AI to strengthen healthcare delivery for our communities. 🩺

Through our work with Speedback and other AI enabled digital tools, we are helping empower Pasifika and wider communities to take a more active role in their health journey by supporting regular health monitoring, strengthening connections with healthcare professionals, and creating opportunities for earlier intervention and better health outcomes.
✅Our goal is simple: to make healthcare more accessible, proactive, and community-focused, ensuring people receive the right support at the right time.

We were proud to share how technology and cultural connection can work hand in hand to improve wellbeing for future generations.
Fa'afetai tele lava to the organisers for creating a space to showcase innovation, collaboration, and solutions that are helping shape the future of healthcare in Aotearoa. 🙏🏽

A warm Pacific welcome to Liz, who joins our growing aiga here at Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley through our partnership with NPHS-Central and the He Whare Taonga (Healthy Housing) Programme. We look forward to the shared knowledge, connections and journey ahead.🌺

🗣️Talofa lava, my name is Liz Pedersen (née Filipo).
I was born and raised in Lower Hutt. My father (Maletino) is from Falealupo and my mother (Lanuola) is from Faleula, Samoa. They both migrated to New Zealand in the early 1980s, and their journey, values, and commitment to family have greatly influenced who I am today.
I completed my Bachelor of Nursing (Pacific) in 2007 and have spent most of my nursing career working in community health.

I am now working alongside Twiggy Johnston in the He Whare Taonga programme dedicated to supporting our kaumātua to live in warmer, drier, and healthier homes.
He Whare Taonga means "House of Treasures," reflecting our belief that our elders are treasured members of our communities and deserve homes that support their health, wellbeing, and independence.

In our roles, Twiggy and I complete healthy housing assessments, provide practical advice on keeping homes warm and dry, and connect kaumātua with interventions that can make a real difference to their daily lives. These supports may include heaters, bedding, draught stoppers, and other resources that help create healthier living environments.
What I enjoy most about this work is seeing the positive impact that a warm, dry home can have on a person's health and quality of life.
It aligns closely with my passion for community health, prevention, and supporting people to thrive within their own homes and communities.
I look forward to continuing this journey and working alongside whānau, communities, and colleagues to improve health and wellbeing for those we serve. 😊

At Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley, we know that our greatest strength is our people. This series is dedicated to celebrating the incredible team members who have been with us for many years - those who quietly show up every day, often without realising just how much they’ve grown or the impact they’ve made along the way. 🙌🏽

Today, we celebrate Lole and 15 years of dedicated service to Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley. From starting her journey as a student nurse, Lole has grown into a highly respected Clinical Lead for our Well Child Thriving Cores Service, caring for our pēpē from birth through to primary school.

Her journey reflects growth, leadership, dedication, and a deep love for our people. Along the way, she has continued to grow her scope of practice as an Authorised Vaccinator and Community Nurse Prescriber, helping ensure our babies and families receive timely and accessible care, both in clinic and in their homes.

🇹🇴 And of course, she is our Dancing Queen of Tonga💃🏽 with a bubbly, warm and loving nature that lights up every room she walks into. Her genuine care, joyful spirit and can-do attitude have made her deeply loved by our pēpē, children, families and, most importantly, our team!

Anyone fortunate enough to cross paths with Lole is sure to be blessed by her warmth, kindness and beautiful spirit. 🙌🏽
