READ. for Real Europe really needs reading. 75 million adult Europeans are unable to read with understanding and lack properly developed literacy skills. So Read. For Real!

Reading is the future. European Authors Day will offer celebrations across Europe thanks to the collaboration of an international consortium of seven partners from five countries supported by Creative Europe. The events will be held during November 11th-December 12th each year. Meetings with European Authors travelling from country to country will take place across Europe. Schools, preschools, libraries and bookstores from all around Europe are invited to join in with their creativity and unlimited potential! We want to offer the children and youth the experience of reading REAL books for fun, introducing up-to-date most trendy topics for REAL conversations around books, stimulating pleasure in REAL time around books, treating a conversation with a REAL author or creator as a formative experience - is the vision for : beyond nationality, latitude, political, social, religious or wealth backgrounds. Research proves reading to be a factor for development and innovation, a binder of civilisation, social capital and democracy. The main goal of the project is to make a positive impact on the European reading landscape.

Happy ! Does your town read? For Real!

A town that reads together grows stronger.
Reading builds skills, self-confidence and empathy and brings neighbours and generations closer, so it’s a direct investment in residents. It also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education and sustainable communities.

🟣 Between 11 November and 12 December, European Authors Day invites cities and regions to plan their own celebration together with local partners.

What can your town or local authorities do?
🤝 Build a joint programme with libraries, schools, bookshops and local businesses.
🎙️ Invite local authors and illustrators to meet readers in libraries, community centres or the town hall.
📖 Ask the mayor, local artists or sports figures to read aloud at a public reading in a square, park or on public transport.
🔄 Launch a city-wide book swap or start book clubs for teenagers, adults and families.

Register your events and put your town on the European reading map, alongside readers in nearly 40 countries. Free materials are ready to download.

Over 17 000 educators have already joined 2026 ! 📚

Reading with understanding, thinking critically, putting thoughts into words, finding pleasure in a good story: these are the skills we want children and young people to take from every book.

Educators are the ones who help them get there. They choose the right story, ask the question that starts a discussion and turn a lesson into a shared reading experience that stays with young readers.

🟠 Between 11 November and 12 December, schools and libraries in nearly 40 countries celebrate literature and its authors.

If you’re an educator, work with children and youth, join them:
▪️register your reading activity and put it on the European reading map,
▪️ download free lesson scenarios for reading activities with children and young people,
▪️ use the ready-made materials in your classroom or library.

Some of the best conversations about books happen between generations.

welcomes readers of every age. A shared reading, a book club or a conversation after an author meeting gives people a simple way to spend time together, discover new worlds and open up to one another.

For older readers, this matters in a particular way. Research associates regular reading and other mentally stimulating activities with slower cognitive decline in later life. Reading groups also give people a reason to meet, talk and stay connected, which counts for a lot at a stage of life when loneliness becomes more common.

Today is .

Right now, many children and young people across Europe are navigating real pressure on their mental health - and reading is one of the quieter tools that can help.

A book can ease stress, offer a safe way to sit with difficult feelings, and build the kind of resilience that carries into everyday life. For some children, a story is the first place they see their own emotions reflected back, and realise they're not alone in them.

That's part of why matters this fall: not only to celebrate literature, but to give children and young people real space to read for pleasure, together.
