CAPAC-Research Training Program Cancer Research Training Program at the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The CAPAC Program is under the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UPRCCC). Our long-term goal is to contribute to the development of the next generation of successful cancer control researchers with a cultural sensitivity to the Hispanic population.

Meet Our CAPAC 2026 Peer-to-peer mentor Luis F. Díaz Pagán! 💜
 
 
Luis is currently completing a doctorate degree of Pharmacy at the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy. This summer, Luis has been working under the mentorship of Dr. Pablo E. Vivas-Mejia at the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he is working on the characterization of MMP3 inhibitors for ovarian cancer treatment.

Meet Our CAPAC 2026 Peer-to-peer mentor Richard J. Holcknecht! 💜
 
 
Richard holds a Master of Science in Psychology from Lynn University and a Master of Arts in Bioethics and Medical Humanities with a concentration in Medicine, Society, and Culture from Case Western Reserve University. This summer, Richard has been working under the mentorship of Dr. Carola T. Sánchez-Díaz at the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center, where they are investigating whether sleep disturbance modifies the association between cardiovascular comorbidity burden, defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed hypertension and heart disease, and Health-Related Quality of Life (FACT-G) among adult cancer survivors in Puerto Rico enrolled in START-PR.

Meet Our CAPAC 2026 Trainee Valeria Herrero Martínez! 💜
 
 
Valeria is currently pursuing a doctoral degree of Dental Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus. This summer, Valeria has been working under the mentorship of Dr. Yisel M. Cantres Rosario at the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center, where they are investigating the interplay between oral microbial products and brain immune cells and their roles in glioblastoma multiforme.
 
We look forward to seeing all that Valeria accomplishes this summer! ✨💜
