💜 PMOS Awareness Month 💜

So along with an exciting name change, PMOS has had an update of the NICE guidelines in the UK. Now these guidelines are not finalised just yet but they are proposing lots of exciting changes for people with PMOS like:

💜 Yearly review - for many people with PMOS the experience has been that once you have a diagnosis you are left to manage the condition with either diet and lifestyle changes or the pill, however this change means patients should get regular follow up with monitoring of the condition including your symptoms, periods, hormones and glucose control.

💜 Earlier diagnosis - the draft guideline makes detailed recommendations on when to suspect PMOS. It recommends that all people with irregular or absent menstrual cycles and symptoms or signs of excessive levels of male hormones should be investigated for PMOS because these are often linked to the condition.

💜 Highlights PMOS is a lifelong condition - and explains that it is possible to get a diagnosis after menopause.

💜 Focusing on the mental health impact of PMOS - Having PMOS can significantly impact mental health and quality of life and the draft guideline highlights that depression and anxiety are common across all ages in people with the condition. Eating disorders also common in those with PMOS and the draft guideline is clear the presence of these should not be dismissed solely on the basis of a person’s weight.

What are you excited about with the new draft NICE guidelines??

I've been offline for a while as the summer holidays are coming to an end and it's been busy in real life..... but what better time to get back on here than PMOS awareness month!

It is September and PMOS awareness month is here so let's get into it!

The recently renamed PMOS or Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (previously known as PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome) has been front and centre this year with the condition being renamed to more accurately reflect the symptoms and consequences of having the condition.

For those who are new around here....PMOS is an endocrine disorder which affects around 1 in 10 people with ovaries worldwide.

Given it is a syndrome (collection of symptoms), it can present differently in different people with PMOS, and common symptoms include:

❤️Irregular periods
🖤Acne
🤍 Hirsutism
💚Hair thinning
❤️Mood disorders
🖤Infertility
🤍Weight concerns
💚Sleep difficulties

Do you have any questions about PMOS you want answered over the course of this month?

Kinda chic….PMOS non-diet edition

As an evidence-based women’s health dietitian who practices through a non-diet lens I reckon it is kinda chic

❤️ To choose sustainable habits over the latest “PMOS diet

🖤 To care about what your body can do, not just what it looks like

💚 To seek evidence rather than another “hormone balancing hack”

🤍 To realise you don’t need to be smaller to be healthier

❤️ To stop fearing foods (especially carbs)

🖤 To remember that healthy lifestyle behaviours have benefits even without weight loss.

It is kinda chic to ask “What does the evidence actually say?” because PMOS nutrition doesn't need to be extreme to be effective. And there is no one diet that has been shown to be the PMOS diet.

Less restriction. More nourishment. More nuance. 🤍

Can a simple mineral like zinc transform your PMOS journey? 🔑

In our latest blog post, we are peeling back the layers on how zinc can impact your hormones and can help you to feel more in control of your body.

Inside the new guide, we’re covering:

👉🏽Insulin Resistance: How it supports your body’s use of fuel as it helps your cells properly respond to insulin.

👉🏽Skin Health: While skin health is complex and influenced by many factors, zinc can be a great support by helping to calm inflammation and balance the specific hormones that trigger oily skin

👉🏽Gut health: How zinc plays a role in maintaining and repairing your digestive lining, which is a key step in reducing that uncomfortable, heavy bloating after meals

👉🏽Protecting your long-term health: zinc helps to look after your heart health and menstrual cycle for the future - not just for managing your symptoms today

We also look at how to get more zinc in your diet and if you decide to take a supplement then we have all the information you need to help you choose which one - know exactly which type of zinc actually absorbs well, and which ones are a waste of your money

After being invited to deliver a webinar all about managing PMOS through diet and supplements, I am sharing a bit more about PMOS and supplements.

While supplements are not necessary for everyone, for some people with PMOS supplements can support improvements in their symptoms.

In the webinar I talked all about the following supplements and the evidence behind if/how they may help manage PMOS symptoms:

🐟 Omega-3
☀️ Vitamin D
🌱Berberine
🥦 Folate
🥔 Magnesium
🫘 Inositol
🦪 Zinc
🥚 Choline

While supplement use should be tailored to your goals and symptoms, and some of these supplements have more/better quality evidence than others, it is best to make an informed choice about if you want to try supplements and which ones to try.

If you are interested to find out more about supplements which may support PMOS then you can head to the blog as I have lots of blogs about various supplements, or drop me a DM and let me know you want more info and I will keep you updated on an upcoming project I am releasing all about PMOS and supplements.
