From growing up on Whidbey Island to serving as a combat medic in Iraq, Terry dedicated his life to helping others in some of the most challenging environments. But after returning home, his life took an unexpected turn with a diagnosis of ALS—one that would change everything. Faced with physical and emotional challenges, Terry chose not to give up. Instead, he focused on staying active, present, and connected to the people and purpose that matter most. As ALS progressed and everyday tasks became more difficult, he searched for new ways to maintain his independence. That search led him to Carbonhand—an assistive glove that helped him regain grip strength and control. What may seem like small moments, like holding a water bottle or playing pickleball, became powerful milestones on his journey back to independence. But this story is about more than technology. It’s about mindset, support, and the determination to keep moving forward. With the help of his family, his community, and a willingness to try new solutions, Terry continues to live life on his own terms.

How to Improve Upper Extremity Function After Spinal Cord Injury
A loss of upper extremity function creates one of the most devastating effects of SCI. It affects financial stability, mental health, and social connections. The statistics paint a stark picture, just 35% of Americans with SCI find employment after injury. Medical costs skyrocket, leading to a 33% increase in bankruptcy within five years [1]. Your ability to use your arms determines how well you can handle basic self-care and take part in community activities.

Living With Inclusion Body Myositis:

A Patient's Guide to Daily Independence Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is a progressive muscle condition that most often affects men over the age of 50, though women can also develop it. It belongs to a group of disorders known as myositis, which cause chronic muscle inflammation and weakness. While IBM is considered one of the more complex forms of myositis, a growing body of research and clinical experience shows that individuals can take meaningful steps to preserve function and maintain independence.

Free AOTA Approved CEU Course

In this distance learning course, you will learn how patients experiencing hand weakness can improve their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) through the effective use of a variety of assistive and adaptive devices. Specific populations affected by hand impairment, common clinical presentations, and evidence-based traditional treatment options will be discussed in depth. In addition, you will explore the latest commercially available assistive technologies designed to support hand strength and function, and discover practical strategies to help patients increase their independence and confidence during everyday occupational tasks.

What patient need does Carbonhand address?
Many individuals with neurological, neuromuscular, orthopedic, or age-related conditions experience reduced grip strength and limited endurance in the hand, despite retaining the ability to initiate voluntary movement. These patients often:

• Can open and close the hand, but lack sufficient force to grasp, lift, or hold objects
• Experience rapid fatigue during repetitive or sustained grasp
• Rely on compensatory strategies or assistance, limiting independence in daily activities
• Are unable to fully benefit from conventional therapy or passive assistive devices in real-world tasks

Carbonhand is designed to support patients who have preserved intention to grasp but insufficient strength or endurance to perform functional activities independently. By providing intention-controlled grip assistance during activity, Carbonhand addresses the gap between motor ability and functional performance, enabling patients to engage in meaningful tasks at home, at work, and in the community.
