Real Life Prosthetics is committed to supporting medical professionals and those requiring custom artificial limbs and orthopedic braces. And, as a privately owned company, Real Life Prosthetics, is in the position to maintain these standards. All of the professionals at Real Life Prosthetics have met the rigorous training requirements and passed the required examinations of the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics (ABC). ABC is recognized in the United States as the highest standard of education and professionalism. Our technicians are ABC registered, and our prosthetists and orthotists are ABC certified. In addition, the Real Life Prosthetics staff at all levels participate in continuing education to keep pace with the latest advancements in the field and maintain their knowledge of human anatomy, material science, biomechanics and normal and pathological human locomotion. Q: Are there cosmetic options for prosthetic limbs?

A: Yes! Prosthetic limbs can be designed to support both function and appearance, helping patients feel confident and express their individuality. Options include skin-toned finishes, custom laminations, hard covers, and, in some cases, custom-shaped foam covers fabricated in our in-house lab. For example, our technical team can sculpt foam covers to create a natural contour or personalized look, combining comfort with artistry.

Not every prosthetsis requires a cosmetic cover; the choice depends on your goals, activity level, and desired appaearance. Whatever option you choose, our team ensures your prosthesis is both functional and visually appealing, supporting your mobility while reflecting your unique personality.

Twenty-five years ago, Real Life Prosthetics opened it's first clinic in Abingdon, Maryland. Jonas, was just beginning the journey, along side Bill and Sandy, of building a company and serving patients in our community. Then, on September 11, the world changed.

Jonas remembers wondering what this meant for a new clinic and what the future would hold. None of us knew that the days, months, or years ahead would look like. Today, as we reflect on 25-years of Real Life Prosthetics, we also remember that first year and the uncertainty that came with it.

Twenty-five years later, we are still here. Still serving our patients. Still supporting our community. Still grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. Some dates mark where we began. Others remind us why we keep going.

Today, we remember. We honor. We are grateful.

Q: What is the role of suspension in a prosthesis?

A: Suspension is a crucial part of a prosthesis that keeps it securely attached to your residual limb, ensuring comfort, stability, and safe movement. The right suspension system can make a big difference in how your prosthesis feels and performs.

Common types include:
• Suction suspension: Uses a tight seal and a passive suction valve to hold the prosthesis in place. It offers excellent stability and a natural feel but may require precise fit and maintenance.
• Pin-lock systems: A liner with a distal pin locks into the prosthetic socket. This system is easy to use, reliable, and provides secure attachment as well as easy detachment for daily activities.
• Vacuum-assisted suspension: Actively removes air from the socket to create suction. This improves comfort, reduces skin movement, and enhances limb volume control.
• Other options: Some prostheses may use belts, sleeves, or hybrid systems depending on your limb shape, activity, and comfort needs.

• K3 users may benefit from energy-storing feet or components designed to provide stability and support for walking, light jogging, or recreational sports.
•K4 users who want to return to running, competitive sports, or high-impact activities can choose from specialized running blades, dynamic response feet, or athletic components designed for performance, speed, and shock absorption.

We’re excited to welcome Christopher J. Michalowski, CPO/LPO, to the Real Life Prosthetics team!

With more than 35-years of experience in orthotics and prosthetics, Chris brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and genuine passion for helping people regain mobility, confidence, and independence. Chris began his career at A.I. DuPont Hospital in 1992 and went on to complete his orthotics and prosthetics education through Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center in Chicago. As an ABC-certified prosthetist-orthotist, he has dedicated his career to helping patients achieve their goals and get back to the activities and life they value.

Chris will be serving patients throughout our Delaware clinics, bringing his experience and patient-centered approach to the communities we serve throughout New Castle County. For Chris, successful patient care goes beyond providing a device. It’s about listening, building trust, and working together.

Please join us in giving Chris a warm welcome to Real Life Prosthetics! We’re grateful to have his experience and dedication as part of our team!
