Sadly, another independent pharmacy will soon be closing its doors. Governor Kathy Hochul could sign the PAPA bill, which passed the Assembly unanimously, to help slow these closures. Unfortunately, it’s sitting on her desk for weeks now unsigned!

Thank you New York State Senator Tom O'Mara (left) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (right) for getting our "PAPA" bill over the finish line Friday! It was a bit of a roller coaster and came down a little too close to the wire but also with the help of the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York - PSSNY we got it done.

While there is still more work to do, this bill will help stabilize reimbursement to all pharmacies in NY. Pharmacies have to make the choice whether or not to fill far too many prescriptions at a loss than they should. As a result there have been a significant number of unnecessary store closures due to the actions of PBMs. These two legislators are on the side of their constituents in maintaining access to local close to home healthcare services their pharmacies provide.

We still need Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the bill but this was a major hurdle in the process that has us breathing a little easier now.

There are certainly a lot of opinions around AOC. However, here she is spot on. The vertical monopolies that CVS Health, Express Scripts, and OptumRx have created need to be broken up. Pharmacy owners have been raising this issue for decades. They are solely responsible for the mass closures of chain and independent pharmacies. Hopefully this is a partisan issue that our government can finally tackle.
