Prentice Funeral Home Prentice Funeral Home
1154 Kenmore Blvd. Akron, OH 44314
(330) 753-7721 Prentice Funeral Home has been family owned and in this community since 1914.

My husband Tom Prentice was the fourth generation to own and operate this funeral home. He died unexpectedly from cancer in July of 2014. Since that time, I have been taking care of the families we serve along with several area funeral directors. I have discovered that this is my calling. I love helping families during their worst days. I know what they are feeling and are going through. I love helping them create a meaningful tribute to their loved one. I encourage them to bring mementos to display that their loved ones collected and cherished, to play their loved one’s favorite music, to bring poster boards of pictures, videos of pictures, scrapbooks, and framed family pictures to display. Prentice Funeral Home is proud to offer a variety of services. We can assist you in completing all of the arrangements with the special preferences you desire. Our intention is to help make every ceremony personal and meaningful, truly reflective of the life that was lived. Most people today bring their children and they get restless, so we have a playroom to keep them occupied. Also, ask about our services for veterans. In addition to the wide range of services we offer, you will receive an online memorial that you can share with family and friends. We also post your loved one’s obituary on Facebook so that you are able to share it on your own page. While honoring your loved one is our top priority, we also want to help you through this difficult time. We have a wide range of resources to support you not only today, but in the weeks and months to come. Sincerely,

Lori Gardner Prentice

January 12, 1957- October 10, 2026
The Northeast Ohio music community mourns the passing of Mark Gonder, an extraordinarily gifted musician and teacher. To those who knew him as a colleague, you knew him as a consummate professional, fluent in all styles and genres, utterly reliable, and a supportive, joyful bandmate. To those who knew him as a teacher, you knew him to be encouraging, enlightening, patient, and generous. To those who knew him as a friend, you knew him to be loyal, funny, meticulous, and deeply spiritual. To those who knew him in all three ways, you knew you were fortunate.
Mark grew up in Akron and was one of the original crew Roland Paolucci assembled to form the Akron Jazz Workshop, an incubator for an astonishing array of talented musicians, many of whom later joined the University of Akron Jazz Studies Program.
Mark married his wife, Susan, on November 27, 1980, and together moved to New York City, where he worked as an active freelance musician for 10 years. During that decade, on Jim Rupp’s recommendation, he toured the world with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, performing in South America, Europe, and Japan.
Upon his return to Northeast Ohio in 1990, he accepted a position in the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, which he maintained with distinction for 17 years, performing with Bill Holman, Bob Brookmeyer, Bob Florence, Maria Schneider,
Gerald Wilson, and many other top arrangers and composers in the Jazz idiom. He joined the faculty of the University of Akron in 1998 and remained in that capacity until 2019. While at UA, the Faculty Jazz Quartet performed hundreds of concerts for the Children’s Concert Society throughout Summit County. He also played with the Jazz Unit almost continuously for 25 years, recording the remarkable album Choices, featuring Dave Morgan's music. He was an esteemed teacher at the Hudson/Fairlawn School of Music, along with its founder Kurt Reed, one of Mark’s closest friends.
Selecting just a few highlights from such a long and extensive career is difficult, but here’s a short list. He recorded the album Pacific with Pat Pace and Bob Fraser in 1978. In 2002, he performed a concert with the Jazz Unit of Frank Zappa's music at the Tri-C Jazz Festival with saxophonist Ernie Watts. In 2005, as a member of the University of Akron Faculty Jazz Quartet, he performed in Akron’s sister city, Chemnitz, Germany, on a 10-day goodwill tour. In 2009, the Faculty Jazz Quartet participated in a UA-initiated program to establish an exchange with the Federal University of Minas Gerais and spent two weeks in and around Belo Horizonte, Brazil, performing concerts and master classes. In 2015, the UA Faculty Jazz Quartet was invited by the U.S. State Department to perform at the dedication of the new American Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, and to play several concerts in Casablanca, Fez, Khouribga, and Rabat.
Mark was a member of Local 4, Cleveland Federation of Musicians.
Per his request, there will be no services.

Summer Blessyn KnottsJuly 17, 2020 – September 7, 2026

Summer Blessyn Knotts, 6, gained her angel wings on September 7, 2026. Born July 17, 2020, Summer was a medically complex child from birth, but her life was defined by so much more than her medical challenges. She was a deeply loved daughter, sister, granddaughter and niece whose six short years left an everlasting mark on everyone who loved her.
Summer shared an especially beautiful bond with her grandmother, Tammy “Maw Maw,” who raised her and devoted her time and heart to caring for Summer. Summer loved cuddling with her Maw Maw and watching Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown together. Summer also enjoyed cuddling with Ms. Chelsea, her nurse.
Summer enjoyed her FaceTime “arguments” with Aunt Mimi, making her little “oohs” and “aahs” and always making sure her opinion was heard.
Summer leaves behind her mother, Tierra; father, Brandon; stepmother, Stephane; grandmother, Tammy; grandfather, Gerald; siblings, Winter, Liliana and Levi; aunts, Wanda (Nate), Marlene and Rose (Wally); uncle, Ryan; and many other loving family members.
Waiting to welcome Summer at Heaven’s golden gates were her granddad, Clifford Godfrey, and Aunt Ann.
Six years could never have been enough, but Summer knew a lifetime of love.
Services will be held at Prentice Funeral Home, 1154 Kenmore Blvd. in Akron, on Sunday, September 13th at 4:00 p.m. Calling hours will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
