The terms "funeral" and "memorial service" are often used interchangeably, but they describe two different options with key differences in timing and structure. Knowing what sets them apart can help you make the right choice for your departed loved one.
A funeral service:
-Gives families an immediate structure during a disorienting time
-Is held with your loved one present, in a casket or an urn
-Typically takes place within a few days of the death
-Often includes a visitation or viewing beforehand
A memorial service:
-Can be planned weeks or even months later
-Is held after burial or cremation has already taken place
-Offers greater flexibility in venue, format and personalization
-Allows more time for out-of-town family and friends to make arrangements
Neither is more meaningful than the other. The right choice is the one that feels right for your family.
