Regularly scheduled mammograms are vital for early detection of breast cancer, but understanding your individual risk involves more than screening alone. Evidence shows that breast cancer risk can be influenced by a combination of factors, including age, family history, lifestyle, genetics, and hormonal factors. While some of these risk factors can’t be changed, understanding them can help you make informed decisions about your health.
Key strategies for risk management include:
• Know your family history. Those with certain histories may benefit from genetic counseling, and when appropriate, genetic testing for inherited changes in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2.
• Maintain healthy lifestyle habits. Eating a balanced diet, getting regular physical activity, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking may help lower breast cancer risk.
• Discuss hormonal factors with your healthcare provider, such as hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, and other hormonal exposures.
• Follow recommended screening guidelines, which may depend on your age, personal and family history, and other risk factors.
• Know what’s normal for you. Be aware of changes in your breasts, such as a new lump, swelling, skin changes, ni**le changes, or unusual discharge. Share concerns with your healthcare provider.
Early detection can improve the chances of finding breast cancer earlier, while risk-reduction strategies can help lower the chance of developing breast cancer. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about tailoring screenings and preventive strategies to your individual risk.

🚨 If you think you're having a heart attack, your first instinct might be to get in the car and head to the hospital yourself.

But that decision could put you and others at risk. Calling 911 gets trained emergency responders to you quickly and allows treatment to begin before you even arrive at the hospital.

Learn why experts recommend calling 911 instead of driving yourself during a heart attack:

Staying strong, steady, and mobile can make a meaningful difference in maintaining independence as we age. Physical therapy can support these goals by addressing strength, balance, endurance, mobility, and physical function.
In particular, physical therapy can improve balance and reduce fall risk. Fear of falling or having experienced a previous fall can affect confidence and participation in daily activities. Physical therapists can work with older adults to address factors associated with fall risk through treatments that focus on balance, muscle strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance.
Physical therapy also can benefit older adults living with frailty, recovering from a stroke, or managing chronic conditions that affect movement and function. Treatments can be tailored to each person’s abilities and goals, and may be designed to improve physical function, manage pain, and make movements and activities easier and safer.
Maintaining strength and mobility is key to helping individuals continue to do things they enjoy most. Talk with your healthcare provider or a physical therapist to learn whether physical therapy may be appropriate for you or a loved one.

Rehabilitation following a spinal cord injury doesn’t necessarily end when someone leaves the hospital or completes an inpatient rehabilitation program. Recovery and rehabilitation can continue long after the initial injury, with the focus often shifting over time from intensive rehabilitation to maintaining function, preventing complications, adapting to changes, and working toward new goals.
The greatest amount of neurological recovery often occurs during the first year after a spinal cord injury, but improvements can continue beyond that time. Ongoing rehabilitation and physical activity can help people maintain strength and function, improve mobility, increase independence, and address changing needs over time.
After completing formal inpatient rehabilitation, individuals may continue their recovery. The type and amount of ongoing rehabilitation will vary from person to person. Factors that may influence an individual's rehabilitation plan include:
• Level and severity of the spinal cord injury
• Changes in strength, movement, and sensation
• Individual goals and priorities
• Functional needs for home, work, or in the community
• Access to rehabilitation and resources
• Changes in health and physical abilities over time
For some people, ongoing therapy may help them work toward new functional goals or address challenges that arise later in recovery. For others, rehabilitation may transition into an individualized exercise and activity routine focused on maintaining function and preventing complications.
Spinal cord injury recovery is not the same for everyone. Rehabilitation can evolve over time to meet changing needs, goals and abilities.

09/21/2026

After a spinal cord injury, a person may experience spinal shock, a temporary physiological response in which the spinal cord function below the level of the injury is suppressed. This can cause a temporary loss of reflexes, muscle tone, movement, and sensation. Spinal shock can last days, weeks, and sometimes longer. Timing and duration can vary.
Paralysis, on the other hand, refers to a loss or impairment of voluntary movement. Depending on the location and severity of the spinal cord injury, paralysis can range from partial to complete and may affect different parts of the body. It can be accompanied by changes in sensation, muscle tone, and reflexes.
The distinction between the two is that spinal shock is a temporary physiological condition. Paralysis, however, is a neurological impairment that may persist after spinal shock resolves. As spinal shock subsides and reflexes return, healthcare professionals can obtain a clearer picture of a person's neurological function and the extent of the spinal cord injury.
Understanding the difference between spinal shock and paralysis is an important part of evaluating and treating spinal cord injuries. Ongoing neurological assessments help healthcare professionals monitor changes and guide rehabilitation and care.

It’s estimated that more than 50 million Americans live with chronic pain. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the back, hips, knees and feet are among the most common locations for pain in U.S. adults.

For many of those experiencing pain, physical therapy is a non-drug approach that can help manage pain while addressing factors that may contribute to the pain.

Physical therapy treatments can:
• Improve mobility
• Enhance muscle strength
• Increase endurance
• Contribute to joint stability
• Develop flexibility
• Promote overall well-being

Physical therapists can create individualized treatment plans that may include prescribed movement, strengthening and flexibility exercises, hands-on care, and education to help people manage pain and improve function.

For those living with pain, talk with your healthcare provider about whether physical therapy may be an appropriate part of your pain-management plan.
