🎃 A little pumpkin fun with a whole lot of OT! 🍂

Cutting, mixing, painting, and getting our hands messy? Sounds like the perfect fall therapy session! 🎨🙌

This pumpkin project is more than just a cute craft. Every step gives our kiddos an opportunity to work on important skills:

✂️ Scissor skills — hand strength, coordination & control
🥣 Mixing — bilateral coordination & motor planning
🎨 Finger painting — tactile sensory exploration & fine motor skills
🧠 Following steps — sequencing, attention & problem-solving
💛 Getting messy — exploring new textures and building sensory tolerance at each child’s own pace

🌟 MEET THE FPT TEAM: SHAYNA 🌟

Meet Shayna, MOT, OTR/L, one of our Occupational Therapists! 💛

Shayna earned both her bachelor’s degree in Biology and master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of New Mexico. She has a special interest in pediatrics, autism, cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions, as well as neuro- and orthopedic-based treatment approaches. 🧠💪

Why pediatrics? Shayna loves watching kiddos build new skills, gain confidence, and create a foundation for greater independence. And if there’s a vestibular activity involved, even better! 🙌

One thing Shayna wants every family to know is that independence doesn’t look the same for every child. OT is about recognizing each kiddo’s individual strengths, needs, and goals and helping them participate as fully and independently as possible. ✨

And a fun fact about Shayna? She has FIVE dogs! 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

Tiny beads, BIG work! 💪✨

Using tweezers to find and pull beads out of Play-Doh might look like a simple activity, but there are so many skills being challenged along the way!

🖐️ OT targets:
• Fine motor strength & control
• Pincer grasp and hand strength
• Bilateral coordination
• Hand-eye coordination
• Attention & problem-solving
• Sensory exploration

💪 PT targets: Depending on how the activity is positioned, kiddos can also work on postural control, core stability, weight bearing, balance, and endurance while their hands stay busy!

That’s what we love about play-based therapy — one activity can work the whole body while still feeling like FUN. 💛

🌟 MEET THE FPT TEAM: CRYSTAL 🌟

Meet Crystal, PTA, one of our Pediatric Physical Therapist Assistants! 💪💛

With more than 8 years of experience, Crystal loves helping kiddos build the strength, movement, confidence, and independence they need to participate more fully in everyday life. She especially enjoys working with kiddos with torticollis, Down syndrome, and pre-walking gross motor delays.

Her favorite therapy activity? Give Crystal just about anything and she’ll find a way to turn it into an obstacle course. 😂🙌

Crystal loves reminding families that progress doesn’t always happen in BIG leaps. Sometimes the smallest victories—trying something new, gaining a little independence, or discovering a new skill—are the ones that lay the foundation for those BIG milestones. 🥹💛

And a pretty incredible fun fact: Crystal lived in Morocco for FIVE years, where she worked with children with cerebral palsy! 🌎

When she’s not at FPT, you’ll find her reading, embroidering, hiking, traveling, or playing Mah Jongg.

And we can’t leave out her favorite words of wisdom from Michael Scott:
“I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious.” 😂

💜 Tiny beginnings. Big milestones. 💜

September is NICU Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the incredible kiddos whose stories started in the NICU — and the families and medical teams who have cheered them on from the very beginning.

For some NICU graduates, coming home is just the beginning of their developmental journey. As they grow, pediatric OT, PT, and Speech Therapy can provide extra support with movement, play, sensory development, communication, feeding, and everyday skills.

At FPT, we believe every milestone deserves to be celebrated — whether it’s holding their head up, taking a first step, trying a new food, communicating a need, or joining in on the playground. 💛

Meet Greg Harris, COTA, one of our Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants! 🙌

Greg has several years of experience working with kiddos in pediatric, school-based, and clinical settings. He especially enjoys working on sensory processing and self-regulation, fine motor skills, coordination, and everyday activities that help kiddos become more confident and independent. 💛

One thing Greg wants families to know? Things that may LOOK simple—getting dressed, handwriting, participating in play, regulating emotions, or tolerating different sensations—actually involve a whole lot of skills working together! Sometimes those small improvements can make a BIG difference in everyday life. 🧠💪

When he’s not at FPT, Greg keeps the creativity going! He’s been playing guitar for more than 20 years and also enjoys filmmaking and other creative projects. 🎸🎥
