Congratulations to our Resident Graduates! We celebrated our wonderful PGY4s Drs. Le Wen Chiu, Luis Sardiña, and Kimberly Artounian as they complete their training and embark on their next chapters, and acknowledged ALL the important work we have done this past academic year, including a special (and hopefully temporary) goodbye to faculty Dr. Darren Kempton, who was also voted Instructor of the Year 🌸🎓

💠Dr. Chiu will be joining Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles to practice general dermatology.
💠Dr. Sardiña is joining UNM Dermatology with a focus on hair disorders/scalp pathology and general dermatology at our UNMH Dermatology Clinic.
💠Dr. Artounian is joining East Valley Dermatology in Arizona to practice general dermatology.

hosted our 6th Annual Dermatology for Primary Care Conference this past weekend - we had a GREAT turnout with our high yield sessions connecting our valued community primary care providers (PCPs) from across New Mexico learning from faculty, chief resident Dr Surya Veerabagu and exceptional guest speakers: Dr Evan Choate (resident alumni, Kaiser Permanente), Dr Deeptej Singh (Letter of Academic title, Sandia Dermatology), and Dr Kim White (peds alum, former derm resident, Bebe Care Pediatrics).

Topics this year included: hair + nail disorders, integrative dermatology, urgent care dermatology, dermoscopy, procedures, skin cancer prevention, and dermatopathology. Thank you to our Dermatology Interest Group students for continuing our tradition of fun case-based quizzes to promote learning with prizes!

Congratulations to UNM School of Medicine student Maria Gabaldon-Parish & PGY2 Resident, Dr Avalon Yi, on receiving a 2026 Good Skin Knowledge (GSK) Community Grant from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)! The AAD Good Skin Knowledge Community Grant program awards funding ranging from $400–$2,000 to nonprofit and community-based organizations in underserved areas to help deliver skin health education to children ages 8–13. Through this initiative, communities are empowered with engaging lesson plans and resources that promote healthy skin habits and sun safety awareness. is proud to celebrate Maria's and Dr Yi's achievement and dedication to community education, outreach, and advancing dermatologic health equity in New Mexico. PGY3 Resident, Dr Surya Veerabagu, was awarded the Resident Fellow Award from the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) for her project entitled “Cutaneous Ge***al and Acral Melanoma Treatment Trends and Outcomes." Her work on this nationwide evaluation of specialty site cutaneous melanoma surgical trends and outcomes can impact specific melanoma guidelines, optimize patient care, and identify treatment disparities.
