As May, Melanoma Awareness Month, comes to an end, wants to highlight our Ryan Daniell Fund which was created to specifically support recruitment and retention of dermatologists in our state, and to help make all of our free skin cancer screenings across New Mexico happen. During the 2025-2026 academic year, it allowed us to screen nearly 500 New Mexicans in Gallup, Carlsbad, Taos, Albuquerque, and Rio Rancho. Dr Surya Veerabagu, PGY3 Resident, attended the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) .college Annual Conference in Austin, Texas along with Resident Program Alumni, Dr Jose Cortez & Dr Alba Posligua. Over this past weekend, conducted our two largest free Spot Me Skin Cancer screening events of the academic year - Dermatology Clinic in Albuquerque and in Rio Rancho to kick off May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness month!

Our team of dedicated volunteers screened over 300 community members, most of whom received skin cancer awareness education and reassurance for benign lesions, and approximately 10-15% will need follow up for a suspected cancer or pre-cancer, including for melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Together we are truly improving and saving lives.

To our student volunteers, provider screeners, and clinic support staff who graciously donated their valuable time and expertise – THANK YOU for making such a difference. We have tremendous gratitude for the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center Shannon Shaw Fund and the Ryan Daniell Memorial Fund for making these possible at all.

This important initiative takes effort and dollars to support it sustainably. We welcome donations at any level to keep this going into next year and beyond.
