A Prayer for the Dying
By: Charlie Rainbow Wolf

Death is part of everything that lives, and that sometimes means things are sad or uncomfortable. With tomorrow being Samhain, remembering the dead seems appropriate, through All Hallows' Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day (October 31 to November 2). This is a very simple spell for all ages and experience levels, and it should help with feelings of distress or discomfort. It is suitable for this time of year but may be used at any time a memorial is appropriate.

Simply quiet yourself and write down the names of all of those who have passed and whom you want to remember. Safely light a candle (I prefer white, but black or a seasonal color would work too) and read the names out loud, pausing to recall a memory connected to each person—even if that memory is simply why you chose to remember them. This is a great solo activity, but it seems to gain power when done in a group. Members can read their own list, or a communal list can be read by one person. Extinguish the candle when done.

Sweet Dreams Spell
By: Phoenix LeFae

For this dreaming spell, you will need the following supplies

1 light blue or white chime candle (and a holder)
Mugwort essential oil
A sprinkle of dried mugwort
1 small amethyst stone that can fit under your pillow
Your journal

Roll the candle in the mugwort oil and sprinkle the candle with the dried mugwort. Before going to sleep, prepare a warm bath. Put the candle in the holder and light it. Place the candle where you can see it burning from the tub. Place the amethyst stone near the candle. Get into the bath, relax, and set the intention for dreams to come to you. When the candle has finished burning, leave the tub and go to bed, placing the amethyst under your pillow. Keep your journal next to the bed. Any time you wake up, write down anything on your mind: words, letters, colors, feelings, or anything else that pops up.

Triple Goddess Invocation
By: Dallas Jennifer Cobb

Midweek is a great time to get your house in order. Time spent organizing is crucial to keeping a business or household flowing. Invoke the Triple Goddess;

I call upon Maiden, Mother, and Crone to tend to my business affairs and home.
I invoke their power and energy, so that all three can help me.

Maiden energy: Innocence, new beginnings, creativity. What needs to begin or be discovered or explored? Any new projects or clients that need attention? Curiosity is your helper. Mother energy: Protective, nurturing, sustaining, and strong. What needs support to continue to grow? How can you feed, protect, and sustain what has already been started? Care is your commodity.

Crone energy: Wisdom, insight, and understanding. Where do you need to reflect and comprehend? See cycles as your currency.

Maiden, Mother, Crone, be blessed. With your guidance I'll do my best. Blessed be my home and business.

Bastet Blessing
By: Laura Tempest Zakroff

As the caretaker of two beautiful voids, I would be remiss not to mention that today is National Black Cat Day! While some people hold the misconception that black cats are bad luck, witches know better. In ancient Egypt, black cats were considered kin to the cat-headed goddess Bastet, who oversees protection of the home, health, fertility, childbirth, and of course our feline friends. Bastet especially protects the home from evil spirits and disease—both of which we know cats are very good at doing!

To protect both our home and our beloved cats, we have a special altar for Bastet in our home. It's fairly easy to find a statue of Bastet, but you can use any statue of a black cat or even a photo to start your altar. I generally offer her blessed water and catnip, but chocolate, w**e, b**r, fruit, and dried meat are other common options. Say:

Beautiful Bastet, she of the house,
Keep us safe from enemy and mouse.
Feline fancy and black cat divine,
Accept these offerings at your shrine.

Messages from Your Beloved Departed
By; Mat Auryn

As the veil between the worlds thins, the Sun in mystical Scorpio and the Moon in steady Ta**us enhance our ability to receive messages from loved ones who have passed on. This gentle ritual opens a safe space for spiritual communication.

Gather these materials:

A white candle (for spiritual connection) in a holder
A black candle (for protection) in a holder
An item or photo of your departed loved one
Dried rosemary (for remembrance)
Matches or a lighter
A piece of amethyst (to enhance intuition)

Create a quiet, sacred space where you won't be disturbed. Place the white candle on your left and the black candle on your right, with the photo or personal item in the center. Scatter the dried rosemary around the item.

Safely light the black candle first, stating:

Guardians strong, protect this rite,
Surround me with your shielding light.

Next, light the white candle and say:

Between the worlds, this sacred hour,
I call upon love's gentle power.
(Name of departed), if you hear my voice,
Send a sign of your own choice.

Hold the amethyst in your hands, close your eyes, and focus on your departed loved one. Feel the love and connection you share, allowing any messages or feelings to come through without force.

After spending some quiet moments, express gratitude:

Thank you, (name of departed), for your love and light.
I cherish our bond both day and night.

When ready, extinguish the candles. Keep the amethyst under your pillow or near your bed to remain open to messages in your dreams.

Season of the Ancestors
By: Stephanie Rose Bird

As the thinning of the veil between humans and spirits becomes most noticeable, it is a good time to honor your ancestors. A fulfilling way to accomplish this is by building an ancestor altar. As the harvest season is also in full bloom, this altar should include lovely goodies from the garden. Safely burn a white candle and set your intention to honor your ancestors. Lay cloth specific to your ancestry on a table or space dedicated to your ancestry altar. If you are unsure of your ancestry, lay out a small cloth to which you are attracted.

Recite:

I call you, my ancestors.
This place, created with love, is where I honor you.

Place currency that they will find useful in a clear or crystal bowl. This can be coins, to***co, cowrie or other shells, etc. Put fragrant flowers in a vase of water on the table. Pour water or spirits in a shot glass. Add photographs if you are called to do so.

Visit your ancestry altar to hear what they have to say to you and honor them frequently. Replenish the currency, spirits, and flowers as you are called to do so.

Simmer Pot Sacred Wash
By: Alisa Rose, Amanda Lynn

During Samhain, as the veil thins and ancestors draw near, we honor them by transforming our homes into sanctuaries of beauty and warmth. This sacred time calls for sweeping away the old, creating altars, lighting candles, and preparing favorite dishes, all to welcome our cherished guests. Embrace this season with a simple yet potent folk magic: a simmer pot that fills your space with aromatic blessings and evolves into a cleansing ritual for your home.

You will need:

1 quart water
2 bay leaves
1 cinnamon stick
2 tablespoons dried orange peel
1 tablespoon dried rosemary leaves (or a few sprigs of fresh)
White vinegar
Dish soap
A cleaning spray bottle

In a large pot, combine the water and herbs. With a finger or wooden spoon, trace a pentacle above the pot. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, allowing the warm aroma to permeate your home. Simmer for no more than twenty minutes, adding water as needed. Remove from heat and let cool, then strain out the herbs. In a spray bottle, mix 2 parts herbal infusion, 1 part white vinegar, and a few drops of dish soap. Use this blend to cleanse and bless your home in preparation for Samhain and the winter ahead.

Ribbon Spell for Love
By Melanie Marquis

Cast this spell to encourage self-love and to attract the interest of a suitable and worthy match. Choose a red, blue, or purple ribbon, and hold it to your chest right over your heart. Think of the love your heart is capable of feeling, and imagine this feeling flowing from your heart chakra into the ribbon. Then think of your best qualities, and choose some words to describe the things you love about yourself. Write these words on the ribbon.

Go outside under the moonlight and hold the end of the ribbon. Swirl it around in wide clockwise circles in front of your body, then wiggle it out away from your body to make waves or spirals with the ribbon. As you move the ribbon, say:

I send my love to find my love, my love will come to find me! My loving heart speaks loud and clear to light the way and shine me!

Hang the ribbon securely on the outside of your home near a door or window, place it in your bedroom, or carry it with you.
