This week we are looking at the fifth and final Yama of the Yoga Sutras, Aparigraha. This Sanskrit word means non-possessiveness, non-greed, and non-attachment.

Author Deborah Adele writes about attachments in her book The Yamas and Niyamas, explaining the word “attachment” can be traced to a root word meaning “to nail.” Attachment, says Adele, is like, “nailing ourselves to our need for someone or something to continue to be the same and to always be there for us in the same way.”

Learning to let go allows us to be fully present in the moment and allows room for more happiness, harmony, and joy.

Some of the ways we can practice Aparigraha in our daily lives include; consuming mindfully, setting boundaries, releasing the need for validation, and avoiding comparing ourselves with others.

When we let go of the clutter in our lives and in our minds, we find clarity, purpose, and live with an open heart and mind. We have room to grow and space available for the universe to fill with goodness. ❤️

Stay connected with us this week as we continue our discussion on Aparigraha!

We talked earlier this week about the ways in which the fourth Yama of Bramacharya encourages us to avoid excess and chose a middle path for the best use of our personal energy.

Another way yoga practitioners interpret putting Bramacharya into action, is to recognize and avoid distractions that take our attention away from our spiritual path. It is often described as the practice of moving toward wisdom, truth, and the knowledge of our true self.

One way we can feel more connected to our spirituality and find the peaceful, divine place within us, is to recognize and honor the sacredness of everything around us. There are so many opportunities for cultivating this awareness daily.

❤️Take a mindful pause during the day to intentionally feel yourself connected to the earth or notice your surroundings.

❤️Treat objects with respect by recycling, reusing, and repairing. Donate clothing and other items no longer needed so that others can enjoy them.

❤️Shift your language from “using” to “belonging.” For example, instead of thinking about “spending” time in nature, think about ways to honor your connection to the natural world.

When we practice moving about the world with the awareness of the sacredness we share with others and the world, we see and honor the divine within everything.

Celebrating the joy and happiness of others can help us cultivate the same spirit within ourselves. Next time you notice someone who’s clearly enjoying themselves, see if you can tune in and feel their energy. Or, tell someone who seems joyful how nice it is to see them so filled with light and happiness. Let that lightness brighten your day. Reflect your own joy! ✨

This week we are looking at Brahmacharya, the fourth Yama in the Yoga Sutras. Bramacharya is commonly described as “non-excess” or “right use of energy.”

Bramacharya encourages us to behave in ways that align with our spiritual (how we treat ourselves) and ethical (how we treat others) values. It’s a call for moderation and being mindful of our actions and emotions. Think of it as a middle path - not too much of “this” and just the right amount of “that.”

In this context, Bramacharya is all about the way we manage our personal energy. Think of your energy like water in a bucket. Overindulgent behavior depletes the water in the bucket, leaving us empty. Never dipping into the bucket makes the water stagnant and useless. The middle path keeps the bucket full, fluid, and ready to flow in healthy ways.

There are many wonderful dimensions to Brahmacharya and ways to practice in our daily lives. Stay connected here as we discuss more about this Yama all this week!
