Stay calm and carry on!

I joke with folks that I did not get a Ph.d. because I dreaded being called "Doctor Bill" (I'm not a fan of
Dr. PHIL). I did have some hopes of becomming...known, I guess, for providing people with some great information on how to improve thier relationships, but that hope certainly has not been met with any "viral" take-offs of my books or my posts. And, I admit, I'm kinda bummed about that. And so, with my 68th trip around the sun on the horizon, I kinda think I have to take the hard walk away from that fantasy. I must remind myself that maybe I have helped a few people/couples over the past 44 years of doing this work/vocation. I owe so much to Anne Krill for the success I have had; without her, I'd have never had what I needed to become an LPC. I will keep posting, and if you find anything I put out helpful, please pass it on to others.

Emotional Reactivity

Parents are not archetects building thier child; totally responsible for the outcome...they are more like gardeners, nurturing, hoping, and caring....making mistakes at times, and do not control the sunshine or rainfall. Stop blaming your parent for everything not right in your life; take some self accountability.

Do you have "intimacy rituals"?

Every parent does the best they can under the conditions they find themselves; no parent is perfect. And so we ALL hurt our kids, but in the many moments of our parenting lives, we may miss the fact that they have been hurt. Later, they may become embittered and stop calling, visiting, or reaching out.

Both parent and child can become very self-righteous amidst the mutually emotional, reactive process, both blaming and shaming. This continuing cycle erodes affection, care, and patience.

There is a clear trend these days for kids to go to shallow or no-contact with thier parents. This is very sad and painful for both parent and child (and very sad concerning grandkids). The only path forward to healing (but only if both parent and child are willing to) is for everyone to confront thier own emotional reactivity process, and to abandon their entrenched, embittered positions.

Parents need to comprehend that kids and family have changed since they were kids, and kids need to comprehend just how important the relationship is for the parent (and the kid). Only then, can the relationship be renegotiated.
