Connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) are challenging to diagnose and manage. One myth: Hypermobile EDS, where people experience extreme flexibility due to very loose joints, isn’t as serious as other forms of EDS.

Recently, UVA Health EDS expert Dacre Knight, MD, joined Bendy Bodies podcast founder Linda Bluestein, MD, to talk about the myths surrounding hypermobile EDS and chronic pain.

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month! For Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients, losing the ability to speak can be devastating — affecting care AND wellbeing.

At University Medical Center in Charlottesville, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are dedicated to restoring communication for patients silenced by ventilators or illness. By implementing innovative solutions and collaborating with care teams, they empower patients to express pain, make important decisions, and connect with loved ones when it matters most.

A sweeping international study has identified ways to detect patients who are at serious risk of sudden death, heart failure or other dangerous outcomes from heart thickening known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The findings will help save lives while also sparing low-risk patients from unneeded heart implants.

The researchers found that combining advanced heart imaging with blood test data could improve their ability to determine who is at greatest risk.

☀️ 🛶 33 years ago, UVA Health occupational therapist Leslie Baruch helped launch Central Virginia Burn Camp, a free week-long camp for kids ages 7-17 who have survived serious burns. It gives campers the opportunity to make friends and experience the fun and adventures of summer camp in a supportive environment.

Today, Leslie (third from left) is still involved with the camp as a director and volunteers for it every summer. Many of our other occupational and physical therapists also give their time to volunteer at the camp.

This year's camp is June 7-13, and it's outer space themed! 🚀 Learn more and apply: https://vaburncamp.org/

A sweeping clinical trial at UVA Health and more than 150 other sites has identified how best to prevent strokes and save lives in patients with dangerous narrowing of the large blood vessels that provide oxygen to the brain.

“We now know that in patients with severe carotid stenosis who are without symptoms can benefit from carotid artery stenting,” said Avery Evans, MD, a UVA Health interventional neuroradiologist. “This treatment can help prevent stroke in a large number of patients who suffer from narrowing of the carotid arteries.”

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. for both men and women. But traditional coronary angiography, a test commonly used to detect heart disease, can miss some diagnoses of specific types of heart disease that reduce blood flow to the heart, especially those more common in women.

We were the first health system in Virginia to use a new comprehensive test called coronary function testing. It gives doctors a more complete picture of how the heart’s blood vessels are working, rather than only detecting blockages in the coronary arteries.
