The Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN) launched in October 2016 with support from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Value Partnerships, and the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) at the University of Michigan. OPEN was founded in an effort to develop a preventive approach to the opioid epidemic in the state of Michigan by tailoring postoperative and acute care opioid prescribing.

Next week on Thursday, September 17, OPEN will be host the second part of the webinar series titled "Tackling Complex Pain When Surgery is Part of the Plan."

This webinar will go over unique challenges that can often present in a perioperative setting including opioid tolerance, central sensitization, and coexisting behavioral or medical health conditions.

Next week on Thursday, September 10, OPEN will be host the first part of our Proactive Pain Practice series titled "Anticipating and Addressing Perioperative Pain Management Needs in Patients with Opioid Use Disorder."

This webinar will review best practices for managing acute surgical pain while maintaining continuity of MOUD, minimizing risk for return to use, and promoting safe and effective analgesia.

Each year on August 31, we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day, the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the families, friends, and communities they leave behind.

As we mark this important day, we invite the OPEN community to come together in remembrance, reflection, and continued commitment to preventing overdose and supporting those affected by substance use.

The University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions and Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN) began collaboration in 2023 to release a Michigan landscape map and white paper. These resources highlighted demographic information in connection to opioid use disorder, looking at data such as EMS response rates, annual income, and opioid-related hospitalizations.

Tomorrow is the last chance for Michigan middle and high school students to submit up to three pieces of their original artwork to be considered for our upcoming toolkit designed to help families talk about substance use.

All selected artwork will be featured in an "album cover" style in printed and digital materials that will be distributed across the state of Michigan!

The winners will be announced on Friday, Augst 28!
