Blood clots can pose serious health risks, making it important to recognize the warning signs. Recent news about NFL quarterback Jalen Hurts receiving treatment for blood clots in his leg and lungs has brought renewed attention to this condition.

Symptoms may include swelling, pain, warmth or skin discoloration in the affected area. “Thorough imaging with vascular ultrasound is one of the most important steps in diagnosing blood clots,” says Carlin Williams, MD, vascular surgeon. “It helps providers determine who needs medical treatment and who may benefit from surgery.”

News of Pope Leo’s lung cancer diagnosis has brought greater attention to the disease and an important reminder: Lung cancer can affect people who don't smoke.

“While to***co use is the single biggest risk factor for developing lung cancer, it is not the only reason someone may have lung cancer. Around 20% of people in the United States with lung cancer are never smokers,” says Stephen M. Cattaneo, MD, medical director of thoracic oncology at Luminis Health. “The natural assumption when you hear that someone has lung cancer is that they are a smoker, but that’s just not true.”
