Congratulations to our June EMH Employee of the Month, Melissa Lattin! Melissa is a valued member of our Dietary department.

Melissa's nomination was actually SO long and detailed that we had to significantly trim it down. Below is a very small portion of her nomination:

Melissa is a great addition to our hospital. She has brought great ideas and a great attitude to the Hospital. Melissa is more than willing to get involved in any area of the hospital, always comes to work with a smile on her face, and always looks for good in any situation. Melissa is a very great team player and willing to help anyone with their job. She does well with interaction with the patients, always has a pleasant personality, and gets along with everyone here. Melissa is a fast learner and in some circumstances can be a teacher. We are blessed to have Melissa as part of our Ellett family.

If you or a loved one needs additional assistance after an illness, injury, or surgery—but prefer to stay out of a nursing home—Ellett Memorial Hospital’s Swing Bed Program may be the perfect fit.

A Swing Bed Program allows Critical Access Hospitals to offer skilled care services. Skilled nursing care acts as a bridge between an acute hospital stay and returning home. The goal of skilled care for the patient to rehabilitate so that they can gain back their health and strength and be physically ready go home.

Examples of patients who might qualify for skilled care/swing bed include:
-Patients requiring intravenous therapy (antibiotics or other IV medications)
-Patients recovering from hip or knee surgery
-Patients requiring wound care
-Patients recovering from a stroke
-Patients requiring rehabilitation services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and respiratory therapy

Patients don't have to receive their skilled care in a nursing home setting. They also have the right to choose where they receive their skilled care. If you or a loved one find yourselves in need of skilled nursing facility-level care and would like to receive high quality care closer to home, reach out to our team to learn more about our flexible, patient‑centered level of care.

May is Stroke Awareness Month and we're sharing information from the American Heart Association to help you be able to recognize the signs of a stroke and seek treatment quickly.

Lets start of with 5 Stroke Facts:

Fact #1: Stroke kills brain cells
Stroke happens when a clot or rupture interrupts blood flow to the brain. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells die.

Fact #2: Types of stroke
Ischemic caused by a clot, Hemorrhagic caused by a rupture and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or “warning stroke” caused by a temporary blockage.

Fact #3: About one in four stroke survivors is at risk for another
Fortunately, up to 80 percent of second clot-related strokes may be preventable.

Fact #4: Prevention is key
Had a stroke? Work with your doctor to identify the cause and create a plan to prevent another. This may include managing high blood pressure, making healthy lifestyle choices and taking medications as recommended by your doctor. After an ischemic stroke or TIA, most patients will be prescribed an antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy.

Fact #5: Time lost is brain lost. Getting prompt treatment can mean the difference between recovering well or living with disabilties post-stroke.

Now that you know how to prevent a stroke, it's time to learn how to detect one quickly:

Remember the B.E. F.A.S.T. acronym.

Balance Loss
Eye (Vision) Changes
Face Drooping
Arm Weakness
Speech Difficulty
Time to call 911
