Celebrating today in my favorite place on this Earth...

The Summer Solstice reminds us that life isn't meant to stay in one season forever.
The longest day of the year isn't just about more sunlight, it's a reminder of what happens when we give things time to grow.

Seeds become roots. Roots become strength. Strength becomes something capable of weathering storms.

Some of us are celebrating harvests we've worked hard for. Others are still tending fields that don't yet show signs of growth. Both are part of the process.

As the sun reaches its peak today, I'll be gearing up for my favorite Sedona Hike. I've done this hike in the heat of summer, in the snow, during monsoon season, as the sun rises and at night. Every season gives a different vibe and a different lesson.... Just like life.
There are seasons for planting, seasons for growth, seasons for rest, and seasons for letting go.

Today, I choose to be grateful... for the lessons, the blessings, and the challenges that built me into who I am today.

May you find beauty in your current season and the upcoming one... and peace in knowing that God is present through them all.

As an instructor, my goal is to keep every student and horse owner in a safe position while doing stretching techniques. Accidents can happen so fast and aren't always preventable, but I do feel like there is a large gap in teaching correct safety measures.

As equine therapists, we put ourselves in danger daily to help horses that are irritable, in pain, overworked, overstimulated, or untrained. Many of us are a body type that is unable to physically overpower the horse, so we must work smarter and compromise on what the horse can and can't do.

I had a conversation one time with a farrier friend of mine, where I said...
"I have to work smarter than you, because I don't have the strength you do. I also don't believe strength is the solution to every problem. A stronger physical therapist never made me more capable after a surgery."

When I teach stretching techniques, I'm adamant about hand placement, constant contact with the horse, how to keep yourself in a position of balance, and knowing where your exit point is.

For example, I'll always teach the hold with the hand on the inside of the hoof, because if you're on the toe and the dump a bunch of weight on you... Your hand won't open, but it will if you're on the side of the hoof. Also if your anchor hold is on the inside of the hoof, your outside hand is in a defensive position to keep you safe from a strike.

25 years ago when I was learning from my mentors.... We were taught to stand in positions that you couldn't pay me to stand in now, and I'm a lot stronger than I was then. 🤣 There are two hind end stretches that are still routinely taught that out you in a good spot to get kicked or have a groin tear.

I see videos with these techniques and think, "Younger me definitely did that, but hip replacement me found a better way to get the same results."

I think that's how the evolution of therapy should be.... Mentors teach the only way they know, then classes teach the way their mentors taught them, it becomes standard, but over time we should evolve past our beginning lessons.

Sometimes the problem with how things are taught in a class is that the instructor has not had the same hours working that they've had teaching.
For example, I knew a human massage instructor that went to school and after she graduated, the school hired her on the spot to be an instructor for their program. She was great at teaching their material in the way they wanted so she was a great fit, but she had so very little practical career experience that she couldn't help in those areas.

Funny story... I got asked to instruct for that same school and I declined saying... I'd never be a good teacher because all I care about is building my career. .... Fast forward 12 years and my career evolved into an education system on its own.... Funny how things work.

In my opinion, the success of a student has just as much to do with the practical knowledge given by the instructor as it does the textbook information.
I'd rather learn from a mentor with less formal education and more hours of "doing the work" than someone who's memorized the textbook, but can't tell me how to get out of a bind in a real situation.

Speaking of textbook learning.... I questioned a national board accreditation association on their testing material, because as an instructor I would deem some of the information unsafe. They couldn't even tell me why the question was worded the way it was or how the answer would keep the therapist safe. I went to the school that taught the material and also hit a dead end there to my question, "how does this keep novice therapists safe?"... Cause I can tell you right now that my old a$$ wouldn't be in that position with a horse.

I breaks my heart when I see therapists sharing in Facebook stories of getting hurt or kicked or bit... Because I believe 90% of those situations (maybe 95%) could be prevented with more education on safety.

I just don't feel like it's addressed enough. You can ask anyone that works with me, I'm such a safety person that I annoy my barn help sometimes, but all it takes is one shortcut to get someone killed.

I just want you to enjoy your career, help horses, and stay safe... Because you are important and valuable. Ask questions to your educators. Ask them to explain how a technique will keep you safe. Ask to work with difficult horses under their guidance. Ask them to have accountability for the criteria they teach.
