Shockwave Therapy for Tinnitus: Could It Help the Ringing in Your Ears?
By ShockwaveRx | Asheville, Arden, Hendersonville & Weaverville, NC
If you live with a constant ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears, you know how much it can take over your day. Tinnitus affects millions of Americans, and for many people the usual advice boils down to "learn to live with it." At ShockwaveRx, we think it's worth asking a different question: could part of the problem be coming from the tissues around your ears, neck, and jaw?
What Is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no outside sound is present. It's often described as ringing, but some people hear buzzing, clicking, humming, or whooshing. It can be constant or come and go, and it ranges from a mild annoyance to something that disrupts sleep, focus, and mood.
Common contributors include noise exposure, aging-related hearing changes, ear infections, certain medications, stress, and head or neck injuries. Because the causes vary so much, no single treatment works for everyone.
The Neck and Jaw Connection
Here is something many people never hear: for some, tinnitus is influenced by the muscles, tendons, and joints of the neck and jaw. This is sometimes called somatic tinnitus.
Clues that your tinnitus may have a physical component include:
• The sound changes when you clench your jaw, turn your head, or press on your neck
• You also have neck stiffness, headaches, or TMJ discomfort
• The ringing began after a whiplash-type injury, dental work, or a period of heavy stress and tension
When chronically tight or irritated tissue around the head and neck sends confusing signals to the nervous system, the brain may amplify them as sound.
How Shockwave Therapy Works
Shockwave therapy (also called ESWT or EPAT) delivers focused acoustic pulses into soft tissue. Those pulses are used to stimulate blood flow, interrupt chronic pain signaling, and encourage the body's natural repair response. It's a non-surgical, drug-free treatment that is already well known for plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendon pain.
Because shockwave is so effective at calming stubborn, tight, or irritated tissue, researchers and clinicians have begun exploring whether it can also help when that kind of tissue is contributing to tinnitus.
What Does the Researched Say?
We believe in being honest with you. At ShockwaveRx, we have had 3 success stories to date. All 3 patients have lived with Tinnitus for over 10 years. After 6 sessions, all state their symptoms have decreased nearly 80%.
Research on shockwave for tinnitus is early and still developing. Some small studies have reported improvement in tinnitus loudness or distress, particularly when tinnitus was linked to neck or muscular factors, but larger, higher-quality trials are still needed. Shockwave is not a cure for tinnitus, and results vary from person to person.
That's why we take a careful approach. We talk through your history, your symptoms, and your goals, and we'll tell you plainly whether we think you're a good candidate.
Who May Be a Good Candidate?
Shockwave may be worth exploring if:
• Your tinnitus changes with neck or jaw movement
• You have coexisting neck tension, TMJ pain, or tension headaches
• You've been evaluated by a physician or audiologist and want to add a non-surgical option
• Other approaches haven't given you the relief you hoped for
Shockwave is not appropriate for everyone, and certain conditions are contraindications.
Please review the safety information on our website, and see your doctor or audiologist first to rule out medical causes of tinnitus, especially if the ringing is in one ear only, is pulsing, or came with sudden hearing loss or dizziness.
