What is Sensory Processing? 🤔✨

Sensory processing is how our brains take in information from the world around us—and from our own bodies—and make sense of it so we can respond appropriately.

We use our senses every day:
👀 Sight
👂 Hearing
🖐 Touch
👃 Smell
👅 Taste
🤸 Movement (vestibular)
💪 Body awareness (proprioception)

For some children, especially those we support in occupational therapy, sensory processing can be a little different. They may feel overwhelmed by sounds, avoid certain textures, seek lots of movement, or have trouble focusing and staying regulated.

That’s where OT comes in! 💙
We help children better understand and respond to sensory input so they can play, learn, and engage in daily activities with confidence.

Every child experiences the world in their own unique way—and that’s something to celebrate! 🌈

Occupational therapists help people of all ages participate in everyday tasks and routines so they can live meaningful, engaged lives. They use the power of daily activities—also known as “occupations”—as a therapeutic tool to support growth, independence, and success.

When working with children, occupational therapy focuses on:
🧩 Social participation & self-regulation (like play skills and joining family outings)
👕 Self-care skills (such as dressing and feeding)
✏️ Pre-academic & academic tasks (including drawing and handwriting)
🎲 Overall play and development
