Please join us in congratulating Emma Shin, M.Ed., MSW, LCSW, OSW-C®! 🎉

Emma was competitively selected for ESPEC Oncology, a national training program funded by the National Cancer Institute that helps oncology social workers strengthen their skills in psychosocial and palliative care.

For our patients and their families, this means even more expert support with the emotional and practical sides of a cancer diagnosis. We're proud to have Emma on our team!

Learn more about the program in the newly published paper in Current Oncology: https://doi.org/10.3390/curroncol33110653

Background: Oncology social workers deliver much of the psychosocial and primary palliative care in cancer settings, yet few national programs train them in palliative care, leadership, and practice change. Found a lump? Don’t wait. 💗

Dr. Zelnak says the most important step is to get it checked out right away. Your primary care doctor is a great place to start. But if you’re in your 20s or 30s and haven’t been seeing a doctor regularly, you’re not alone, and you still have a place to go.

Call the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute line at 404.531.4444, and they’ll help get you to the right place. 📞

The line is staffed Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can call anytime to request a callback.

"Why do mammograms hurt so much?" 🤔

If you've ever asked yourself that, you're not alone. 95.5 WSB put the question to our own Dr. Amelia Zelnak, and her answer was refreshingly honest.

Yes, she knows mammograms can be uncomfortable. But those few minutes matter. A mammogram can catch breast cancer early, often before there are any signs or symptoms, when it is most treatable. In the long run, that short moment of discomfort is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
And there's good news: technology is catching up. Newer machines use paddles with a slight curve, designed to make the exam more comfortable than it used to be.

Dr. Zelnak's advice is simple: don't let the discomfort keep you away. Catching it early makes all the difference.

So this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let's make a pact. 💚

✔️ Schedule your mammogram if it's time
✔️ Remind the women you love to schedule theirs
✔️ Tag a friend who needs the nudge
Have questions about when to start screening or how often? Talk with your doctor about what's right for you.

Thank you, 95.5 WSB, for helping us share such an important message!

PA Week Spotlight: Alpharetta and Decatur 💚

For the last day of PA Week, meet the physician assistants caring for our patients in Alpharetta and Decatur.

In Alpharetta, Morgan Bowler is “amazing, attentive, thorough and trustworthy,” and one patient says she “makes going to the oncologist bearable.” Katrina Maakaron, who also cares for patients at our Perimeter / Tower office, is “easy to talk to” and “compassionate and listens to your concerns.” And our newest PA, Stacey Perry, brings experience in hematology, oncology, and radiation oncology, and she is already “a great addition to the team in Alpharetta.”

In Decatur, Joy Broyles is “friendly, warm and courteous” and so “easy to talk with” that patients wish their visits were longer. Jonae Richardson, who also sees patients in Conyers, is “very patient” and “makes a doctor’s appointment much easier to attend.”

Thank you, Morgan, Katrina, Stacey, Joy, and Jonae! And to all of our PAs across seven offices, thank you for everything you do. Help us celebrate them! 🎉

What a Friday night at Legion Field! 💗 Our Atlanta Cancer Care team was proud to join the Covington community for the Pink Out Concert, an evening filled with music, energy, and a whole lot of pink.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than a color. It’s about reminding the people we love to schedule their screenings, celebrating the survivors among us, and standing beside patients and families who are in the middle of their journey right now. Seeing so many neighbors come together for that cause was truly special.

And can we talk about that Beyoncé tribute performance? Absolutely incredible. The crowd was on its feet from the first note to the last. 🎤✨

Thank you to the City of Covington and everyone who made this event possible. Early detection saves lives, so if you’re due for a mammogram, this is your sign to book it today.
