“The day that the last person checks out and has somewhere else to be is another good day. I’m looking forward to it.”

For Jim Ball, a volunteer with the American Red Cross of Southwest Georgia, that day will mean families displaced by Hurricane Isaias have found a place to call home.

As shelter lead at a Red Cross shelter in Milton, Florida, Ball and his team help residents connect with recovery resources and community partners.

Nearly two weeks after made landfall, many still face uncertain housing, home repairs and difficult decisions about what comes next.

To every Red Cross volunteer who has traveled to Northwest Florida to help storm survivors: THANK YOU. Your compassion and commitment are helping families take their next steps toward recovery.

“When they get in the vehicle and take a deep breath for the first time and realize we’re here to support them, it gives them hope.” ❤️

For Bill Ladigo, driving "Peachy," the American Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle generously donated by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, is about more than delivering assistance. It's about bringing comfort, hope and a reassuring presence to families facing some of the hardest moments of their lives.

From responding to local home fires to serving communities impacted by hurricanes and wildfires, Bill and Peachy help ensure no one faces disaster alone.

“I needed to put eyes on everybody down here … and I wanted to make sure people were okay.”

When Hurricane Isaias knocked out power and blocked roads in Repton, Alabama, Shawnera Crook drove from Atlanta to check on her mother, grandmother and neighbors.

She found a community struggling without electricity, air conditioning or a way to cook. The American Red Cross joined local businesses, churches and first responders to provide hot meals and water as residents began the difficult work of recovery.

“The Red Cross bringing food in has been wonderful,” Crook said.

From neighbors looking out for one another to volunteers delivering essential supplies, Repton showed the power of a community coming together after disaster.

The Red Cross of Georgia is proud of our volunteers who step up to help communities in need. Thank you to everyone working alongside local partners to bring relief and hope to storm survivors.

Thank you to the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, the College Park Fire Department and the Red Cross Club at Georgia State University for making our recent College Park Smoke Alarm Blitz a success!

Together, we served 115 people, installed 39 smoke alarms and helped make 40 homes safer.

"It is really important to be prepared and that we are all working together in our neighborhoods to help keep residents safer. The American Red Cross was our very first community partner when the Foundation was established 75 years ago. Being able to serve alongside the Red Cross during our 75th anniversary year was especially meaningful," said Jennifer Tyner, Managing Director of Marketing and Communications, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta.

Smoke alarms provide critical early warning, giving families more time to escape safely. We're proud to work alongside dedicated community partners and volunteers to help families be better prepared and safer from home fires.

As the weather gets more brisk, the Red Cross wants to help keep you and your family safe.

Smoke alarms can cut your risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half.

✅ Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside sleeping areas.

✅ Test your alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year if needed.

✅ Check the manufacturing date. Smoke alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.

✅ Identify two ways out of every room and practice your escape plan.

✅ Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.

🏠 Taking a few simple steps today can help protect your family and provide valuable time to escape in the event of a fire.

Community is at the heart of everything we do.

As part of United Way's Day of Caring, Red Cross volunteers from the Central Midwest Chapter joined efforts at a daycare center in LaGrange, Georgia, helping organize the playroom and refresh the space for the children who learn there every day.

We are stronger when we work together, support one another and give back to our communities.

Would you know what to do in a cardiac emergency?

This Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, we're reminding everyone that lifesaving skills aren't just for healthcare professionals. Red Cross CPR and AED training helps everyday people prepare for the moments that matter most.

Together, we can build safer, more resilient communities, one trained responder at a time.
