Today feels especially personal as we honor those lost as a result of the terrorist attacks 25 years ago; our community mourns the loss of Lee Torrance.

Lee was a past Chief of the Upper Jay Fire Department, an Essex County Fire Investigator and Coordinator, and a member of Au Sable Forks EMS; he began his call to public service with the Au Sable Forks Fire Department, and he served as a communications specialist with New York State Police for more than 13 years. He dedicated much of his life to helping others, whether close to home or far beyond our community.

Following the attacks of September 11th, Lee traveled to New York City to assist in the response and recovery efforts, joining countless other first responders who stepped forward during an unimaginable time.

Those who knew Lee knew a man who cared deeply about his community and was always willing to help when help was needed. His life was defined by service, and his legacy will live on through the many people whose lives he touched.

As we pause today to remember the victims of 9/11 and honor all who responded, we also remember one of our own.

Thank you, Chief Torrance, for your service, your sacrifice, and your example.

Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a Memorial Service at 6:00, including Fire Department honors at Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, 3 College St., Au Sable Forks. There will be a reception at the Upper Jay Fire Department after the services.

Twenty-five years later, September 11, 2001 still feels like yesterday for many of us.

We remember the lives that were taken, the families whose worlds changed forever, and the extraordinary courage of the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders, and the armed forces who ran toward danger when others were running away.

Over the years, we have had the honor of caring for many first responders in our own communities. Some served on September 11, while others spent their lives answering calls for help in our communities, protecting their neighbors, and putting others before themselves. Their uniforms may have been different, but their commitment to service was the same.

Today, we remember them all. We are grateful for their sacrifice, their dedication, and the example they set for the rest of us.

May we never forget.
