When you’re laid low with diarrhea, the last thing you want to do is have a conversation about it — with a healthcare provider or anyone else — but sometimes it's necessary, especially with the current large-scale, multi-state outbreak of cyclosporiasis.

Find out when diarrhea is safe to wait out at home, and when it warrants a trip to the doctor’s office, urgent care or ER.

In a new scientific review, the American Heart Association says most adults can safely consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, roughly three to five 8-ounce cups of coffee.

Inulin is a type of soluble fiber that comes from plants -- it acts as a prebiotic, the naturally occurring, nondigestible parts of food that feed the healthy bacteria that live in your gut.

While there’s no official recommended daily value for inulin, eating fiber-rich foods may help your digestive health as well as your appetite control, more balanced gut microbiota, better mineral absorption, blood sugar control, and a lower risk of constipation.

Inulin is a plant-based fiber that promotes gut health. Foods high in inulin include chicory root, garlic, bananas, leeks, and Jerusalem artichokes.

It’s common knowledge that prescription drugs can cause side effects, and most people know that even everyday over-the-counter medicines can trigger unwanted symptoms, like drowsiness from certain antihistamines.

But far fewer realize that dietary supplements — from vitamins to botanicals like echinacea and ginkgo biloba — can also carry risks.

Many older adults assume vitamins and botanicals are safe, but they can cause heart palpitations, dizziness, and dangerous drug interactions.
