A laboratory study explored a more natural way to kill E. faecalis, a stubborn bacteria often responsible for failed root canals. Researchers compared a standard chemical disinfectant (sodium hypochlorite) against a “probiotic irrigant” made of Lactobacillus rhamnosus, both with and without the addition of peppermint EO. The results showed that while the probiotic alone worked as well as the standard chemical, adding peppermint oil significantly boosted its germ-killing power, creating a much larger “dead zone” for the bacteria on test plates. Because this natural combination was more effective than the traditional chemical treatment in a lab setting, researchers suggest it could eventually become a safer, less irritating alternative for disinfecting root canals, though more human studies are needed.

A cell-based model explored how cilantro EO can help the immune system fight off C. albicans. Researchers evaluated the oil in specialized immune cells called macrophages and found that the oil doesn't just kill the fungus directly; it also "primes" these cells to be more aggressive. Specifically, the oil increases the activity of a key genetic switch (NF-kappaB) that triggers the release of protective proteins and improves the cells' ability to destroy the fungus. These results suggest that cilantro EO could potentially work as a natural immune booster alongside traditional antifungal treatments to help the body defend itself more effectively.
