Jack rang the bell on 11G, after his last cycle of chemo yesterday!!! This journey that started on January 2nd has entered a new phase. We are now out of active treatment and enter the world of recovery and follow-ups. This road will never truly end, but somehow last night we finally felt like we could breathe.

We would not be here without our family, friends, wrestling and hockey communities or our Baldwinsville community. Thank you all for your love and support.

To the best care team at 11G - Upstate Golisano Childrens Hospital and Upstate Cancer Center. Thank you for saving our boy. Our special 15-year old boy, who because of your work, love, education and support can now start 10th grade with his friends, teammates and peers.

Happy birthday to Shaun!! You are remarkable and have been such a wonderful asset to Jack's care team! We can never thank you enough for your care, education, information and friendship you have given Jack since January.

Today, we start Cycle 14 of 14! We are at the finish line for active treatment.

Although these last 6 days have not gone the way we expected, we are finally here. He is excited to be done and start being a 15-year old again. Baker better watch out.

August 17 Update

Still in the hospital, but finally know what he has. We had no idea how sick he actually was when we got admitted Friday, but his amazing Care Team now has a plan and as his numbers continue to improve we may be able to roll right into his last chemo treatment, almost on time...here's a pic of him today. He looks so small in his bed.

August 15

Yesterday was not the birthday I was dreaming about.

Jack was at the clinic yesterday for platelets and blood, unfortunately, he was hospitalized and blood cultures have come back positive, which means his last round of chemo is going to be delayed. He is looking at a hospital stay until at least Tuesday.

Please pray for Jack and our family as we try to navigate this last stretch of the nightmare called cancer.

August 4 Update

Happy birthday to one of Jack's OG Nurses (and one of his favorites, tbh)...hope you are having an amazing day today Rachel!

Cycle 13 (of 14), days 1 & 2 are complete!!!

Jack only has 1 more 5-day stay and his treatments will be done. We are looking forward to having Jack start 10th grade with his peers.

Thank you to everyone who has wished him well and have supported us during this emotional and crazy journey.

Last week was a rollercoaster. We started off last Monday at clinic with a hemoglobin of 6.2, so Jack got a unit of blood. On Thursday, we were supposed to be at clinic by 9 am, but we pushed that appointment. Jack was feeling pretty well in the morning, but by the time we headed to clinic, he was struggling to stay upright. He had to use a transport chair to get from the car to the clinic. They did his CBC test and his hemoglobin was 5.9, and the doctors think it was even lower but was concentrated. For those who do not live in the world of hematology, a normal boy hemoglobin starts at 13.0.

I stepped out of the room as our nurse Shaun was doing vitals. When I got back, he told Jack and I that his temperature was 100.8, and because Jack was neutropenic, he had to be admitted and spend at least 48 hours upstairs.

That evening, there was another 15-year old on the floor, who left us far too soon. He was a light on 11G , who always had a smile and a prank for his nurses and a week prior for Jack. Our hearts break for his Mom, Dad, Sister, family and friends. It was a sobering moment during our journey that keeps the fight we are in with Jack in perspective.

Unfortunately, one of Jacks blood cultures grew something that resembled Staph, but fortunately it seems that was a contaminated specimen and not a true positive.

We were released yesterday and are home, feeling better and resting for his friends birthday party this Friday.

Jack was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in January. He is coming to the end of his active treatment, but his battle is not over yet. It will go on for years to come.

Most people see the bald heads, hospital stays, chemotherapy, and fundraisers.

What they don't always see is everything childhood cancer leaves behind.

🎗️The anxiety.
🎗️The trauma.
🎗️The financial hardship.
🎗️The sleepless nights.
🎗️The friendships lost.
🎗️The developmental delays.
🎗️The strain on siblings, marriages, careers, and mental health.
🎗️The lifelong physical and emotional side effects.

Childhood cancer doesn't end when treatment ends. For many families, the hardest battles continue long after the last chemotherapy infusion.

Let's look beyond what we can see and support children, survivors, siblings, and families through every part of their journey.

🎗️ Childhood cancer is more than a diagnosis. It's a lifelong reality for many.

May 20 Update

It has been a little while since our last update. We have had a Rollercoaster of a month.

Jack was hospitalized for 7 days with a neutropenic fever, that was caused by e. coli. This was one of our toughest stays, physically and mentally since he was initially diagnosed.

He went home and was re-hospitalized 3 days later for his scheduled 5-day inpatient chemo cycle.

He has been receiving radiation treatments every weekday since April 20...last one is June 1st! One of the side effects of radiation is a slower than normal recovery of blood counts, so he has been receiving a number of blood transfusions.

Tomorrow we find out if his numbers have jumped enough to start his next cycle of chemo on Friday.

Last Sunday, we had the opportunity to attend the National Wrestling Duals. The Niver family has been so thoughtful to Jack and our family during this journey. Thank you Riley, Reese, Ruthie, Cliff and Heather Higgins Niver for the thoughts, prayers and the wonderful basket of some of Jack's favorites!

We would also like to thank Bo Bassett, Wyatt Hendrickson and their families for sending Jack a piece of the heart that lives in wrestlers.

If you are new to our story, Jack was 14 years old and a starting 138 pounder for the Baldwinsville Wrestling Team. On December 31 he lost his ability to stand on his own and on January 2 doctors found a tumor in his spine, which was diagnosed as Ewing Sarcoma - a rare and aggressive cancer found in bones or soft tissue. Jack has been undergoing chemotherapy since January 5th.
