You can thank them for caring and just keep doing the work. You don’t have to prove you’re invincible. You are the only one who really needs to understand that you’re not fragile.

Oooooh boy, one of the fastest ways to give me the ick is to be excited that something is “low carb” or “guilt free”.

Sorry, starting over… hi 👋 Did you know your brain alone uses roughly 120 grams of glucose a day? And also that your muscles use carbs to fuel exercise? ALSO also that your body uses carbs to support training and recovery (and don’t even get me STARTED on how carbs support injury recovery - or maybe yeah, do). WHY ARE WE FIGHTING THIS?! This is GOOD NEWS. Carbs are downright fun.

Yet for SOME reason, SOMEWHERE along the way, we decided carbs are just… bad? Make it make even a little sense.

YOU CAN PRY MY SWEET ANGEL BABY CARBS FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS.

You don’t need to eliminate carbs to lose weight (but if you want to get rid of them so you can feel like sh**, get all fuzzy-headed and lethargic, go off, Queen 💅). Fat loss/weight loss comes down to your overall energy balance over time. Carbs can absolutely be part of that equation but they most certainly are not some metabolic villain.

Could some people benefit from adjusting their carb intake? For sure. But they could probably benefit from looking at their protein, fat, and fiber intake, too.

Here’s what I think (actually, I know) is happening:

👉 It’s easier to believe we need to restrict more than it is to face the possibility that we’re struggling to make the other pieces work. 👈

Before you eliminate an entire food group, ask yourself: have I actually explored the basics consistently (for realsies) or am I looking for another rule that makes me *feel* in control?

That question might be uncomfortable (ask it anyway).

You probably don’t need more restrictions. You probably need to look at the whole picture and give yourself a chance to figure out what actually works. You can work toward your goals without making food your enemy. ❤️

First, let me preface this by saying I f***ing love CrossFit. I think it’s so fun, I absolutely love the community, and it truuuuuly changed my life. For realsies…

AND

CrossFit is absolutely, 100%, NOT personal training in a group setting. (Which is fine, bee tee dubs.)

Here’s the thing - coaching a group through a workout and creating an individualized plan for a human being are two very, verrrry different jobs: one has a workout and the other has a person.

A person with a history, limitations, goals, fears, compensations, strengths, weaknesses, and a whole lot of context that doesn’t fit on a whiteboard.

Also I’m totally NOT saying you can’t get stronger, fitter, healthier, or have the absolute time of your life in a group class. You absolutely can. I’m juuuuust saying that a group workout isn’t designed to do what individualized exercise prescription is designed to do.

AND I think we do people a disservice when we pretend otherwise.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone isn’t give them a workout and figure out how to scale it, it’s to figure out whether that workout is even the right tool for them in the first place.

Different services - different purposes. Both have value.

So how do you know which one you need?

If you want to get a little stronger, build fitness, challenge yourself, and enjoy the hell out of moving with other people doing the same things as you? A group class might be exactly what you’re looking for.

But if you’re dealing with persistent pain, working around an injury, struggling to make progress toward a specific goal, or constantly wondering how to modify things to fit YOUR body and YOUR needs? You might benefit from individualized coaching.

And sometimes you need both. The goal isn’t to convince everyone they need personal training. It’s to help people understand what they’re actually paying for, what they need, and which service is most likely to help them get there. 🫡

If you have questions and your kiddo/young person and strength training and/or sport, ask away! I’d love to be a resource for you 🫡

We tend to look for complex explanations when our bodies are really just asking for basic care. Lack of sleep, dehydration, and low physical activity exaggerate pain and stress signals in the brain. Before jumping to extreme fixes or making assumptions about your body, ask yourself: What is one basic need I can meet today?
