Hermia L. Shifflette

Hermia Lourene Shifflette (nee Dixon), age 87, of Bedford, Ohio slipped away on May 29. Beloved spouse of the late James; loving mother of Linda Niro (Gennaro), Laura Beth Boyette (Mark); doting grandmom of Victor Niro (Maria Diaz Martin), Sarah Niro, Alexander Niro, Ryan Boyette, Faith Boyette, and Grace Boyette; dearest sister of the late Eleanor Skronski, Linda Beck, the late Marcella Cobb, the late Jeff Dixon, and Jim Dixon; aunt and great-aunt to a myriad of nieces and nephews; wonderful friend to Robert and Deanna Brewton.

Born in Louisa, Kentucky, Hermia was the second of six children raised in Columbus, Ohio. She spent her summers with her Aunt Irene in Kentucky, where she played hide and seek in the cornfields with her beloved cousins, (to the chagrin of her farmer uncles), cared for the cow who was named in her honor, roamed the hills, and climbed any tree that looked inviting. This is where she honed her lifelong love of nature and her personal relationship with God, as well as the never-ending desire to find the best blackberry patches, no matter how challenging.

Hermia sang in the Columbus girls choir. After graduating from South Urban High School in 1957, she fell in love at first sight with Jim Shifflette through the window of his rental car office during her afternoon walk while on break from her job at Lazarus. One day, Jim surprised her during her routine walk by standing outside the office where he offered her a butterscotch candy. She kept that wrapper for the rest of her life. Jim and Hermia eloped to Los Angeles where they were married in a small Catholic ceremony on November 14, 1959. Hermia drove their brand new 1965 Mustang in stilettos to her job at the bank in Culver City and then her job as a doctors assistant on Venice Beach. After nine years, Hermia and Jim returned to Ohio to raise their growing family on Archer Road in Bedford.

Hermia devoted her life to her children and spent her time volunteering with the schools wherever she saw a need, including PTA president, and was eventually honored as volunteer of the year. She enjoyed expanding her knowledge through courses at Cuyahoga County Community College, and was a voracious reader. Her biggest passion was for her children, and then for her “grands”. Her grandchildren gave her the spark she needed to move forward after she lost her beloved husband of 43 years. She found an outlet for her music passion at the Bedford Falls Café, where she regularly performed with her beautiful singing voice on karaoke nights, and made new friends who felt like family to her until the end of her life. When she moved to the Brookdale Westlake Village, she demonstrated her remarkable resilience by connecting with her new friends who instantly fell in love with her. She enjoyed her village activities where she continued to impress everyone with her glamorous and impeccable fashion sense.

Above all, Hermia possessed an extraordinary loving spirit and deep faith in God. Her infectious smile, witty humor, and her open arms brought people of all ages and walks of life into her orbit where they felt forever cherished.

Relatives and friends will be received at St. John Funeral Home, 923 Broadway Ave., Bedford (ONE MILE WEST OF THE FORBES-BROADWAY EXIT OF I-271), FRIDAY, JUNE 5 from 4-7 PM with a funeral service at 7 P.M. Burial will take place in Louisa, Kentucky at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggestions contributions to PBS or the Berea Animal Rescue Fund in loving memory of Hermia: https://www.bereaanimalrescue.com/donate/

Linda Catherine Wiberg

Linda Catherine Wiberg (née Bush), 62, of Chagrin Falls, formerly of Fairview Park and Gates Mills, passed away at home on May 25, 2026, after a long fight against a progressive disease.

Linda was the beloved wife of Sven Wiberg, with whom she recently celebrated 40 years of marriage; devoted mother of Molly Wiberg, Bridget Varley (Sean), Beth Wiberg, and John Wiberg; grandmother of Bailey Varley; dear sister of Betsy Benedict, Rick Bush (Maria), and Cindy McBride (Jim); loving aunt to many nieces and nephews; and a loyal and treasured friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and William Bush, and her niece, Melissa McBride.

A graduate of Notre Dame Academy (1981) and The Ohio State University (1985, B.A. in Communications and Marketing), Linda embraced campus life, new experiences, and making many friends along the way. Following an internship at Wyse Advertising and graduation, she worked in media buying and account / creative collaboration with GSW in Columbus and Jayme in Cleveland before dedicating herself to raising her family, later taking on part-time roles with several local agencies and Notre Dame College. Her favorite professional role was leading the branding renewal and marketing efforts for St. Joan of Arc School in Chagrin Falls, where she had at least one child attend for 18 consecutive years.

Linda’s greatest effort and joy was in caring for her family and close friends through her welcoming spirit, comforting support, deep and fun conversations, and long walks through Lake in the Woods and local parks. Linda loved to plan and organize celebrations for holidays and life events, especially birthdays, sacraments and graduations with plenty of baked treats, such as home-decorated birthday cakes and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

Linda also enjoyed coordinating vacation trips and large family dinners, plus long walks, gentle waves and warm breezes at the beach, and the highly active banter of Maine and Hilton Head family game nights, whether Texas Hold-Em or Scrabble.

We will remember Linda as a woman of deep faith, full of life and love, who did small things with great care, and always brought active conversation, laughter and energy wherever she went. Linda loved the magic of colors, and all of her friends and family helped to create the beautiful mosaic of her life, each adding their own cherished piece to the vibrant person we know.

Our family sincerely thanks Linda’s “Angel Team” for their compassionate care, home communion visits, milkshake & Chick-fil-A runs, and bringing love, light and joy to each day of her long journey, as well as St Joan of Arc’s dedicated prayer group. We are also deeply grateful to the Cleveland Clinic Palliative Care and Hospice teams for their exceptional support and for always treating Linda with warm kindness, dignity and empathy.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at St. John Funeral Home, 16381 Chillicothe Rd, Chagrin Falls, on Sunday, May 31st from 2:00 - 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church, 496 E Washington St, Chagrin Falls, on Monday, June 1st at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations may be made in honor of Linda to Rainbow Babies & Children’s NICU Family Centered Care Fund (UHGiving.org or mail to University Hospitals, Institutional Relations and Development, P.O. Box 94554, Cleveland OH 44101).

Frederick R. Shafer

Frederick Richard Shafer, 65, passed away from pancreatic cancer on May 22, 2026. Born on February 8, 1961, Fred was a graduate of Greenville High School and a longtime resident of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Fred was the proud owner and operator of Reliable Contracting Inc., a company he founded in 1999. Through hard work, dedication, and craftsmanship, and with an excellent team — he helped create warm and welcoming homes for countless families throughout the years. Working alongside two of his sons and one of his daughters was one of his greatest sources of pride. He spent much of his life in the shop, always building, fixing, creating, and teaching through example.

When he allowed himself time away from work, Fred could most often be found relaxing on a beach in Florida, fishing with a Perdomo cigar in hand and the sound of the ocean nearby — one of the few places where he truly slowed down.

He is survived by his children, Lindsey Shafer, Sebastian Shafer, Magdalena Shafer, and Rebecca Shafer; and his sister Linda Leventry.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Zane Gregory Shafer; his siblings, Jeffery Shafer, Kimberly Shafer, and Scott Shafer; and his mother, Marian Shafer.

Fred will be remembered for his work ethic, his ability to build and create, his stubborn strength, and the love he carried for his family in the ways he knew best. His presence, guidance, and humor will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Family and friends are welcome at St. John Funeral Home, 16381 Chillicothe Road, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023 on Saturday June 13, 2026 from 1-4pm, where Funeral Service will be held at 4pm.
