Peer Projects - Therapy from the Heart is a pediatric practice providing occupational therapy and sp Peer Projects was founded in 2005 by Linda Murphy.

Therapy from the Heart was founded by Mary Lou Gagnon. In 2012 they merged their practices in Beverly, MA offering speech language therapy and occupational therapy, including assessments, social pragmatic groups, Relationship Development Intervention (RDI), craniosacral therapy / myofascial release, feeding and swallowing programs, reading and school consultation.

Preparing for our Netflix documentary about how occupational therapists DON’T help people find jobs…and aren’t physical therapists. 🤭

The two most common misconceptions we hear!

Despite our name, occupational therapists don’t help people find jobs… “occupation” refers to the meaningful activities that fill our daily lives, such as playing, dressing, eating, writing, and SO much more!

And while OT and PT often work together (and there’s plenty of overlap!), OTs focus on helping people become more independent and participate in the everyday activities that are meaningful to them!

Self-advocacy is an essential life skill that empowers children of all ages to express their needs and experiences while helping others better understand what best supports them and how they learn.

During this caregiver info session, RDI Consultant Lizz Ramirez will reflect on neuro-affirming and trauma-informed strategies that can foster independence, effective communication, trust and safety. Whether it’s partnering for an upcoming medical appointment, family event, school or social experience, participants will leave with tools that can help their child better understand their strengths, needs and rights! Time will be reserved at the end for Q & A and discussion.

While research is ongoing, ARFID has been commonly divided into 3 subtypes! A combination of the 3 is also possible.

Transcription: The Subtypes of ARFID, 1, 2, 3. Avoidant, Sensory Based, The “Avoident” subtype is characterized by a limited diet due to strong sensory sensativities such as:
food textures
tastes
colors
smells
Aversive, Fear Based, The “Aversive” subtype is characterized by a fear of the negative consequences associated with eating, such as:
choking
vomiting
gastrointestinal discomfort
Restrivtive, Lack of Interst, The “restrictive” subtype is characterized by a general disinterest in food or lack of motivation to eat. This can be caused by a lack of hunger cues, leading to insufficient food intake.

July is Disability Pride Month. Our book of the Month is Make It All Go Away by Helen Docherty, a children’s picture book about a child named Melodie who experiences sensory overload during a family outing, illustrated by Taylor Barron.

“When Melodie’s family surprises her with a day out, she REALLY doesn’t want to go. The market is SO SMELLY, the bathrooms are SO LOUD, the food is always SO MUSHY, and the lights are SO BRIGHT. What was supposed to be fun is actually making her feel . . . stressed out. Can she block out the things that bother her and end her day in a calmer place?”
