Previously referred to as “Selective Mutism” Situational Mutism is a complex anxiety response that impacts an individual’s ability to speak in specific situations. Why we use balloons in OT! 🎈

👌Fine Motor Dexterity: Placing the balloon onto the nozzle works on precision and fine motor dexterity skills

💪 Hand & upper body strength: Using the pump requires effort from both hands, helping build strength and endurance.

🤲 Bilateral coordination: Works on using both hands to work together to hold and pump the balloon.

🌈 Co-Regulation: promotes shared engagement and connection through playful interactions

👀 Visual tracking: Watching the balloon fly around the room works on following a moving object.

Bonus points for all giggles from hearing the silly noise it makes! 🤭

{Visual Description: The video begins with a colorful bucket of all different color balloons. A child’s hands are seen pumping up an orange rocket balloon on a blue and black pump. The rocket balloon flies across a busy sensory gym environment up the ceiling and to the window before falling to the ground}
