A True First-Class Lady 🌹

Mr. Dewey and the family would like to cordially invite all former students, dear friends, and members of the community to join them this Saturday at 2:00 PM at Powell Valley Memorial for a very special service honoring a remarkable lady whose life touched so many.

In a beautiful and meaningful tribute, she will be rededicated at the family’s private mausoleum recently purchased by Mr. Dewey — a lasting place of honor and remembrance for a woman whose grace, kindness, and influence will never be forgotten.

Please come celebrate her life, memory, and enduring impact with the family.

Before funeral homes, before hearses, before any of the modern rituals we take for granted today, there was the hollow. And when someone died, the hollow showed up. 🕯️

"Sitting up with the dead" was one of the most sacred traditions in Appalachian mountain life. From the moment a neighbor passed until the burial the next day, the community gathered at the family's cabin and stayed through the night. Nobody left. Nobody was left alone. The body was washed and laid out by the women of the hollow. The men dug the grave. And then everyone sat together in the candlelight, talking quietly, praying, sometimes singing, sometimes just being present in the way that only people who truly know each other can be.

It wasn't morbid. It was love. It was the mountain way of saying: you are not alone in this, and neither is the one you've lost. 🏔️
